Seems like sometime within the last two years, Campy record class hubs went from the typical audible buzz to virtually silent. Any tips for spotting the quiet vs loud hubs? As far as I can tell, all the new Mega G3 hubs across Fulcrum 1/Zero, Eurus, etc. are now muted. :|

I've got several rear Record hubs from the silver body era, a set of 2008 Bora's, a set of late 2010 Bora's, and a set of 2012 Boras. All pretty much make the same noise for me.

Maybe you've come accross (sounds like more than once) a brand new hub that might just have a bit extra factory grease around the pawl area?

I have the 12 Eurus Mega G3 wheels and they still have the noise.

It's just the grease................

Add more if you want 'em quiet, less for noisy

Hi,

Exactly. For the past couple of years all Campa hubs seem to be packed with tons of grease which will be pumped out of the way after a few hundred km anyhow.

There used to be a large batch of Bora Ultras out there which had slightly oversized pawls making an awful racket when not greased. So much so that it could function as a bell to signal to people ahead when you'd freewheel.....
Although the problem has been addressed later on all consequent hubs seem to come with way too much grease so the pro snipers can't complain about being "announced" to the riders in front of them. (Or maybe it's just a mere coincidence.....)

Ciao, ;)

I dunno, I've put 2000+km on some Shamals and they are still extremely quiet compared to something like a DA or Chris King.

Hi,

You could always remove the freehub and check the ratchet and pawls for execess grease. Remove it replace with a few drops of lube oil.

Ciao, ;)

Thanks for the replies everyone. Recently spoke to a Campy dealer who feels the internal design for record-class hubs across Campy/Fulcrum production wheels has not changed for several years. Grease it is. :)
