I have actually done it both ways. I have a 10-speed crank running an otherwise 11-speed drivetrain, and I have used an 11-speed crank on a 10-spd drivetrain. Both work just fine.
There's sometimes a buggy.
How many drivers does a buggy have?

One.

So let's just say I'm drivin' this buggy...
and if you fix your attitude you can ride along with me.

I ran my 7900 SRM on 9000 for all of last season. 11sp chain.

Not an issue.

Completely agree. Never had problems running either 10sp or 11sp rings on either drive train. I am always sure to match the chain (10sp or 11sp) to the rear cog spacing (10sp or 11sp), but otherwise everything else works fine between groups.

based on my intended hardware changes, this thread has been a gem to encounter

my 2014 Giant sports a complete 6800 Ultegra 11x2 drivetrain, which I'd like to modify with a 6703 Ultegra 10-speed triple crankset [+ triple F derailler & 6703 F shifter]

if so modified, will it still shift well, and otherwise not be an expensive mistake?

thanks in advance
