Hi guys,

I want to do the marmotte next year and I don't want to use tub's. I want clinchers for peace of mind, even if they are a tad heavier.

SO

What are the lightest clincher wheelsets available?

Thanks

In the Top 5 will be the following:

Custom something -1100 - 1200g (or sub 1000g if you are donald)
Lightweight C's ~1200g
American Classic Mag Clincher ~1100g

You can probably build a set of Alpha 340's down to 1100g if you go an expensive route, or 1200g if you go the cheap route.
That's if you use an aluminium rim. You can source a nice light carbon rim, low depth, and do the same.

aren't the Stan's known to be flexi-flyers?

Only for heavier people. :noidea:

Mine are built the semi-cheapo method to 1200g, 20/24, no flex that I can detect at my 150lbs.

My stans with AC hubs weigh 1182grms cost under £500 . Something about handbuilt wheels just seem better . Before I rode Mavic R SYS premiums around 1350 grms and some Topolinos cx20 rear c19 front ,about the same weight. The Stans are much better.

Agree with predrefeu and artray. I have only about 300km on my new set (Alchemy hubs, cxrays) and so far they are great. Of course, at my weight (59kg) I probably can't flex most wheels....

I checked out the lightweights and they cost about £3350 stg! Expensive but they seem to have a deep section carbon bit also, which would be awesome on the descents!!

How much approx would it cost to build a 1100 g custom set?

And bear in mind my racing weight is 75kg, so nothing silly light that will just bend.

could you please describe your Alpha 340 build? I'm interested in a semi-cheap wheel and I weigh about the same. Thanks.

I have a set of Stans 340s (decals removed) built around Extralite SX/SLX hubs (20h, 24h) w/CX-ray spokes by FairwheelBikes that weighs 496/624g = 1120 grams that I use for climbing. They cost about $1000. Love them, but at 156 lbs/70 Kg I'm not a particularly heavy or powerful rider. Pics and other listings for wheelsets posted on this thread: http://weightweenies.starbike.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=99279

I would go with:

Extralite UltraFrontSX
Extralite UltraRearSX
Sapim CX-Super front (20 radially)
Sapim CX-Super Rear non drive side, and CX-Ray drive side for total of 24 spokes.
Sapim Polyax nipples
Remove all the stickers.

Should be sub 1150g.

You might be able to save 10 more grams if you go with Extralite's ceramic hybrid bearings.

If you go with the new Alpha 340 rim it is a little stiffer and heavier, as well as 24/28 spokes you should be fine.
With good light hubs should be able to get the weight under 1200g.
If you regularly pull 1500+w sprints, not the appropriate wheels.
