I just picked up an old powertap pro wheel (one with the 2 screws holding on the cover). I am having difficulty finding much info on these units and what is needed to make us of them. What is it compatible with and what I need to get to make us of it. Thanks

Colin

Assuming you intend to use the wheel for measuring a cyclist's power on a bike....

You'll need a bike, a compatible tire and tube, a wiring harness, some zip ties, a head unit, and a cyclist. Possibly batteries. Maybe rim tape. Oh, and a Shimano compatible cassette with lock ring.

Given the ambiguity of your question, I had to give a broad answer. Sorry.

Thx for the reply!

I guess it was a little open ended of a question. I have little experience with these, so wasn't sure where to start. I have a ridley compact road bike I was planning to use this wheel on to measure power for training etc. I assumed by asking the question that it would be understood that I would be the rider. I guess my biggest obsticle is figuring out the best setup to make use of this powertap and if it is even worth it based on it's age and availability of parts/harness/etc.

Is there any ability with this powertap to use it with a garmin edge computer or is this model too old?

Colin

Some people buy PT's for use with their clients. So....

The PT model you bought will not communicate with a Garmin. You bought a "wired" model, which came out 5 years before the ANT+ technology your Garmin uses. To actually use the PT wheel for power measurement, you'll need a wiring harness and a head unit. Not a wireless head unit, either. It has to be a wired head unit that slips onto the mount of the wiring harness. For post-ride analysis, you'll need a download cable.

Think of the PT you bought as a wired bike computer that will download to your PC. So you have the "sensor" part. But the data isn't going anywhere (assuming you didn't purchase the harness and head unit) and afterwards, you won't be able to do any analysis (because you don't have the download cable). So you'll need these items.

that's what I was afraid of. At least the rim is decent and I go it all on the cheap. Likely not worth investing in the head unit and harness unless I come across one for minimal investment. More a gadget than a necessity at this point.

Cheers,
