About the cost of chains. An SR cassette costs a lot more than 3-4 chains. If you only get 1-2 chains worth of use from the cassette before it's tossed, that costs far more than buying another chain or two. When chains are alternated, you can get more mileage from each chain and more mileage from each cassette. It's totally a win-win situation.
