Anyone tried Tune GumGum?
Moderator: robbosmans
Has anyone tried the new TUNE GumGUM and the carbon ahead cap?
It is a very light headset expander (9 gr for the expander and 5gr for the cap incl. bolt). (So I am looking at a weight saving of 23gr)
Will it support sufficiently the walls of a carbon steerer?
Would the schmolke carbon ahead cap be a better idea?

The Smolke ahead cap would definitely be the better choice. When you torque the stem the expander has no function anymore – you just need it once setting up the bearing clearance. You can remove and replace it by the ahead cap which comes in at 5 g for € 24.

Regards the Schmolke Ahead-Deckel: although it is said that an expander would only be needed to initially adjust the headset play and would then render useless I have made a little difference experience.
With a flexy steerer (THM Scapula SP) my headset came loose after every hard ride over rough surface - once I installed a tiny expander & ahead cap with alloy bolt (so definitely nothing to take high loads) everything was fine and I have been able to ride for 1000s of miles without having to readjust the headset only once. So to me the combination expander + ahead cap is much more convenient than the Ahead-Deckel, especially as it keeps you from being stranded in the middle of nowhere without being able to do any adjustments.
As for the Tune Gum Gum: the real weight really comes down to 9g. In combination with Tune's Carbon-Cap and alloy bolt (5g) you are looking into a weight of 14g vs. 5g of a Schmolke Ahead-Deckel.

I know, it was your post at FWB forum that I took the actual weights from.
Halo,
This specifications i found by website

Just installed the Tune Gum Gum and Head Cap. Easy to install, looks great and appears to work. It won't get a proper work out until March though! I'll hang on to my USE expander for now...

Tried it, couldn't get it to work.
Have you considered the Extralite Ultrastar. I've had good results.

Strange, worked with no problem for me.
