BHS lite hubs, kinlin 270 rims (semi-aero, go 300's for more aero, 200's if you are light and want light wheels). Chuck on some decent aero spokes (I like cx-rays but they are pricey, some of the cnspokes (chinese) would be fine). Spec the wheels with veloplugs (red for those rims) and decent tyres and tubes*
[*If punctures aren't an issue go something quick and supple with latex tubes, my fav combo is veloflex corsa 20's with Challenge latex tubes but this is a for riding comfort, grip and low CRR, certainly NOT puncture resistance....if you choose latex, you will need to check tyre pressure before each ride....if punctures are an issue, try Conti GP4000s...they are a little sluggish but a very good, grippy, puncture resistant tyre that will do good ks].
All of this is highly dependant on what you weigh and what your intended use is. Just riding? Racing? are you a climber? sprinter? a
A 90kg sprinter needs different wheels to a 65kg climber :)
Updated: Racing again! Thought this was unlikely! Eventually, I may even have a decent race!
Edit: 2015: darn near won the best South Island series (got second in age

Rolf Vigor Alphas. Lighter than Zipp 101 and more aero (in my opinion). Plenty stiff and look cool as hell. I *might* even have some for sale.

Zipp 101's are nice, but you do pay for the Zipp name... In other words, you can do better for that kind of money.

Have a good wheel builder build you a set with Alchemy hubs, Stans Alpha 340 rims, laced with Sapim CX-Rays. Ends up about the same money, but substantially lighter (about 300grams!) and as stiff (if not stiffer).

^it's funny because you said "stiff" as an adjective for "Stans 340"

with 1000 bux I would choose

Extralite Ultrafront SX 24h
Extralite UltraRear SX 28h
Stan's Notubes 340 Alpha
Sapim CX ray
Sapim Alloy PolyAx nipples

Michelin Aircomp latex tubes
Veloflex Corsa 23 tires (front and rear)

while you are ordering all these extralite parts, you might as well order the new extralite skewers, "Streeters" that will weigh only 29g.

This is an astronomically light wheelset that will utterly explode under a rider over 160 lbs.

I'm curious why you think so.

24 spokes in the front, 28 in the back. Unless you can put out 4000 watts I don't think the rear hub will shred. Did you manage to break a similar set with a body weight of 160 lbs?

I don't agree with this one. That is not the stiffest build in the world but it will not explode under use. We've put 190 lb riders on that exact same build with no problems.

Stans alpha 340
Velocity a23

Custom build with your own choice for hubs and spokes.

OR Shimano c24 7900.

These rims and wheels are comparable in the same class in my opinion.

You can always go with Kinlin rims. They were all the rage about 2 years ago on this forum.
