2011 Sram Red or 2012 Campagnolo Chorus 11 for my Colnago
Moderator: robbosmans
Hello! This is my first post so I hope I do this correctly. I am building up my dream bike right now and can really use the help. I'm on a deployment in Afghanistan right now so I've got a little time to make up my mind. I picked up a Colnago CX1 frame for an absolute steal right before I left, however, I'm torn as to what groupo to marry it to. Ok, first off, cool your tounges oh Italian purists! I am aware that it borders blasphemy to put anything other than Campy on such a beautiful piece of Italian art. However, having never ridden either group, and wanting to keep it for a long time, I am torn.
The 2012 Campy is beautiful, and if it were by looks alone I'd go with this NO questions asked. It is neat to thing of an Italian bike with a groupo made right down the road too! I do like the idea of being able to shift more than one gear at a time. I also love the amount of carbon parts and the look of the carbon too. However, I'm trying to go beyond looks, as hard as that may be.
The 2011 Sram Red is light, and considering this years model is even lighter, I could probably find a deal on last years Red. I'm sure there are some sitting on someone's shelf in some storage warehouse. I know it's a great unit from several friends that use it. Not to mention, this unit is on the pro cycling tour.
Sorry for the length, but just want to give a little bit of my thoughts. I've picked a wheel set for the bike, but I can't order it till I decide which groupo. So please give me some feed back on what you think.

There is only one choice here and that is Campagnolo.
I never took drugs to improve my performance at any time. I will be willing to stick my finger into a polygraph test if anyone with big media pull wants to take issue. If you buy a signed poster now it will not be tarnished later. --Graeme Obree
In no particular order of importance:
Campag for lever feel.
Campag for front shifting.
Campag for Italian connection/heritage.
Campag for looks.
Campag for front shifting.
Campag for hood shape.
Campag for front shifting.
SRAM for weight.

If your looking at the 2011 red then there is no comparison. It totally shifts better and is more robust ( better warranty too ) also the chorus is all black now which will look nicer on the frameset..
The red will be lighter and has louder drive train noise too unless you replace the chain and cassette with dura ace units and while your at it you may aswell change the chain rings too so the front shifting becomes some what useful..
Get the campag you'll never regret the decision

Having ridden SRAM force and campaign record on my Colnago EPS. I say Campag without a doubt. Also if you go with Ribble or shiny bikes you will find chorus for less than red for sure

Since when has Sram been "robust"?

The Campag is one faster, you know.
