Weight limit Thomson Masterpiece question

Hello everybody,

I got a question, i have a left over thomson masterpiece (31.6/35) with setback i want to give to my father who weighs around 95 kilo grams. I know on the site the limit says 90kg but my father does not go offroad or anything, he's the touring kind of guy who stays on the asphalt and enjoys everything around him.

So what do you think is it okay or is it just waiting for an disaster to happen?

I am 93 kg and have ridden with one for 3 years without problems (in fact did not know of the weight limit.)

I am guessing the bigger factor would be the amount of seatpost showing above the clamp. You could have a traditional shaped frame with 70mm showing OR a compact frame with 300mm showing. The leverage placed on the longer exposed post wold be many times greater than with the traditional frame (something about fulcrums and exponential pressure....)

So my advice would be, "use common sense" if it looks too precarious then it probably is.

For what it is worth - (mine was set up with a Cervelo R3SL with 250mm showing - and I hammered the thing with little respect for mechanics.)

Thanks for the info! So if i understand it correctly, the more of the post is in the frame the stronger it is. Sounds logical. It's an old specialised frame so i think i can put it in real deep. I will first check it bedore presenting it to him.
