Spec my new wheels and tell me where to have them built

I weigh between 170 and 175 pounds riding a 2010 cannondale supersix which weighs in currently with my garmin 705 -- 14.78lbs. I am currently running ksyrium SL's and I would like to get something a little lighter if I could for my weight. This is going to be an everyday wheel so I still would like something durable that would not give me any problems. I have never had a wheelset built so I need some advice to get the best bang for the buck. Also would like to get in touch with a good wheel builder. Want to stay with clinchers and looking for light weight over aero. Let's say up to $1500.00 aluminum no carbon

Enve wheels are thought of highly on here. Light. Well made. Able to be built into a nice set of wheels. Not sure what your price limit is?

Also, it would help if you mention if you want tubular vs. clincher and carbon vs. alloy wheels. Also do you care about lightweight or lightweight + aero?

We need to know your budget and if you are looking to stay with clinchers (you do say everyday wheel). And echoing the prior response, are you deadset on lower weight or are you also looking for a more aero wheel set (which means deep section which also means more weight)?

contact jason or troy at fairwheel bikes and outline your needs/wants/budget and they will sort you out.

1500 is more than you will need for a nice alloy build. i cant think of any combination of alloy rims and hubs that would total that amount, save for some uber exotic hubs like dash or the yet to be released tune hubs.

Alchemy hubs.
Stan's 340 rims (now 385g each).
20f 28r, CX-Rays.

~1295g and $1040.

How about this build -- thoughts?

Kinlin XR-19W 24F/28R
CHRIS KING R45 HUBS
CX-RAY SPOKES

1380/1390 Grams

Would this be an upgrade over my existing Mavics?

I was going to suggest something similar to rruff. Same rims, x-ray spokes 24/28 F/R with velocity helios hubs. I have not tried the hubs yet but I can;t find anything bad about them either. Should come in way under $1000 too.

Yes... but if you are trying to optimize the weight... the front R45 hub is over built, the rims are not very light, and 20f is a better match for 28r (the front will still be stiffer and stronger than the rear).

Stans Alpha 340 (v1.0, not the 2.0) - yes you can find the rims around.
CX-Ray
Al nipples
BHS "light" hubs

~$600 USD
~1250g (approx)

... since this is pulling up from a year ago, I'll also add that since then my front rim (Alpha) has held up fine, but had to get the rear (Alpha) replaced with a 2.0 version. The 2.0 version seems to be much sturdier. Either way, total price for the build should remain the same, weight gains nominal.

I've never been a big fan of the XR19W. It is a pretty darn soft hoop, and the low max tension exacerbates that. I think that Kings with new version of the 340s would be a better option.

Good call on the 24/28 spoke count too.

Upgrade in being lighter yes, faster? No. Try to get more of an aero rim. Brandon here at Trek of Pittsburgh Robinson store can build up whatever you choose. Going carbon is your best bet in (light, aero, cheap) such as some 50mm carbon clinchers, SUPER strong, great braking with the new Swiss Stop Black Prince pads.
