I have a pair of first generation Sram Force shifters.
When you move the brake levers from left to right, you notice there is an amount of play in the pivot point at the top of the lever.
Is this kind of play still there on the newer Force shifters? Or is there a way to remove the play?

Now i have the opportunity to buy a 2011 pair of sram Rival shifters, which have only 200 kilometers. Should it be an improvement over first generation Force?

I do not have an answer, however am looking at the same thing. I have Force gen 1 and want to upgrade if there is a difference in the newer Sram shifters. My challenge is that the front shifter has way too much swing to successfully get into the big ring.

Anybody have any ideas on the newer stuff for the op's question and mine?

I have experienced something similar in all 3 sets of SRAM levers I own; 1st gen Rival, 2nd gen Rival, and 1st gen Red. I've got to say that it can be mildy annoying when this "play" then morphs into a "squeak", but that's another topic.

I guess you if you could find a c-clip that fit the diameter of the lever pin, you could theoretically use that to take up the space between the lever body and the housing. But I do not know how you would get rid of the lateral play without adversely affecting braking and lever return. I'd wager that if you eliminated the slack by some mechanical means that you could also run the risk of catastrophic failure of the lever housing at the pivot point, but that's just my hypothesis and best left to engineers.

Can I ask why it's such a big deal to "fix" this?

I have FORCE, and from what I have read, RED levers are a significant upgrade in smooth shifting. So I have been on the lookout for a pair at a good price. But I am too cheap to switch unless it is a very hot deal.

FORCE has been "functional" and reliable for me, but I feel like I am shifting a John Deere tractor.

I might just end up waiting until Dura Ace 11 speed comes out.

Yeah, but you mentioned brake lever play and specifically did not mention squeak. Basically, try a drop of dry lube. If you need further information try to search out the various other topics with keywords "SRAM red" and creak or squeak. If that still has you at a loss, then talk with your LBS and see if they think it is worth trying to warranty.
