Hi,

I don't re apply glue to the base tape of a previously glued tubular when re applying. Just the rim. Also I only apply one base layer to a new rim so only 2 coats in total. No problems yet but I don't race and don't really push the adhesion to it's limits.

Either rim side or base tape side should do in this case.

But why only one coat of cement on the rim? The base layer serves as an anchor for the second layer to attach to. Without it the entire job is compromised even if you don't race.
Surely the little extra cement isn't taking too much effort to put on?

A glue job well done makes an awful lot of difference. Not just safety wise but in Crr as well. If you never experienced the difference you should try it out. It is well worth the extra time and effort.

Ciao, ;)

Read my post again. I said with new rims I only apply one base layer plus another layer just before putting on the tyre so 2 in total. In the parktool blog you attached it suggests 2 base layers plus 3rd layer just before attaching tyre.

I'm not saying applying 2 base layers is wrong just I only apply one. If you have to change a tubular on the road it obviously helps if you keep glue to a minimum, but still staying safe. Only one base layer plus pre fix application isn't belts and braces but I think it's sufficient.

Hi,

You meant two coats in total....on the rim then?

This is my precedure (with carbon rims) -

If new rims clean rims with alchohol, apply base layer of glue, glue base tape of tyre if never glued before. Leave 24 hours to dry. Then glue rim, wait 4 minutes and fit tyre.

If previously glued rims no alchohol clean or base layer application of glue.

I use a tin of glue (not tube) and cheap paint brush to apply glue and wheels attached to a bike which is in a bike stand.

Quick, easy and mess free.
