LIGHT CRANKSET - Suggestions ??

I'm looking for options as to a light crankset for a bike that I'm planning.

It needs to be compact(110mm/50/34T) 170mm arms and not BB30.

What I have in mind is something like an FSA K Force Light,

but at a serious cost savings. Are there any asian brands out there

that make a similar product? Sort of like the asian 24mm carbon rims vs.

the Edge rims, etc. Any ideas/suggestions would be welcome. Maybe there's

something that I haven't considered. Doesn't have to be carbon, could

be alloy.

KCNC makes a relatively lightweight alloy crankset that fits your criteria.

Typically I would say the for sale section here at WW is one of the best places to find light and cheap if you don't mind used. You can often find NOS on the bay like the Zipp Vumas, I am running these and they are great though shifting is not the best out there (I would say about the same as my FSAs but nowhere near my DA 7900-but what is?). I gotta say though for solid feel and great shifting nothing beats DA in a standard BB.

I had a set of FSA Cranks and disliked the design and customer service of FSA so much that I will never buy another FSA product - my 2 cents

Cranks should last virtually forever.

I've never had problems with cranks... except FSA. I've had two pairs (differnt models), and on both sets the bonding between the alloy sleeves for the pedal or BB axle and the crank arms worked loose. I had one set repaired under warranty, but they did it again a few hundred kms later.

To the OP: my recommendation is Extralite.

I have been lucky with FSA but had a pair of Zipp Vuma's that became delaminated. Zipp was great with warranty.

I will be needing a new crank soon and liked the KCNC but will keep looking and would like to see the new SRAM offering.

What cranks shall i get?

I've got Tiagra compact crankset. I don't know the weight but im guessing 900g or so?

What shall I get that will save some weight? I'd like to save 300g or so if possible, budget about £200

FSA K force light. Chain reaction are knocking them out for less than £200 and they are around 600g claimed. I have three lots of k force light cranksets and think they are great, especially at that price!

There's also compacts as well should you need them.

I did not like FSA when I had mine... very poor design - perhaps they are better now

If you can find a second hand or NOS Campag Carbon chainset in U-T design then those a light.

NOS ones are still vailable but maybe more than £200.

Also by the time you add the BB to your FSA crank then the cobined weight will be 740g. You tiagra chainset + BB will be ~900g. You car not going to get a 300g saving in other words.

Also look at NOS campag square taper cranksets. These are light at 640g. A Tifosi Sqare taper BB with ISO axle is 220g so this make a very cheap low weight combination. It will cost £85, I know that because I am selling them.

I run the Tiagra/4550 compact, and with a 46t outer 'ring, it's 900g including Dura-Ace cups.

SRAM Exogram. Actually less than 600g (replace chainrings) complete with BB, less than $400.

I'm actually looking for the same setup as the OP, except it should be BB30. Don't mind used as long as it's in good shape.
For those that have experience with FSAs, how does SL-K light compare with K-force, aside from 10g difference?
