I wear a long sleeved base layer underneath, and have tried with a vest on top to stop the wind on the lower part.

I find the Assos ALS recommendations quite correct.
I have been able to use the Habu jacket down to freezing temperatures by using double base layers and a neck, but it is cumbersome. I need a Bonka for that it seems.

I have recently bought an Assos 851 airjack and can't believe how warm it is for such a thin jacket. Beautiful fit, looks and feels like a jersey and so far I've worn it at 4 degrees C for four hours with a SS mesh baselayer no problems. Managed to find a ltd edition one with the piton green back so I'm not camouflaged with the tarmac

Don't you have any issues with the non windstopper on the lower part of the front. After riding less than an hour I am freezing in this part.
Do you ride in windy conditions?

Absolutely no issues so far. I'm in the north of the UK and it's not been that windy so far, but I don't anticipate any problems when the wind picks up through winter. I actually think the jacket might be too warm if the 851 stuff went all the way to the bottom. Suppose we're all different though

In this very thread I have spoken out against winter jackets, but that was before I got the Castelli Aero Rain Lite LS Jersey/Jacket. This piece has got a great temperature range, and is a bit water resistant (not -proof, though). With a good vest on top it can easily take 2h of riding in pretty bad conditions. (I don't mind trading some waterproofness for circulation, because of hardly riding more than 2h in the downpour).

+1 for the AirJack. Awesome Jacket. Works great from -5C to 5C but can also handle up to +10.
I had a Rapha softshell that I sold, these thing was not breathing well.

The new Bonka, which replaces the 851 in the lineup is wind proof also on the lower part.
The two Assos tights that normally would compliment the 851 jacket, the LL.607/Habu and the LL.617/Bonka, both have wind proofing on the abdomen.
