The race was simply too tough for them. Most people thought that the classic guys would be able to follow, but that simply wasn't the case. I wouldn't blame them too much. The climbers excelled today.

The course seemed handpicked for the 120-130lb guys like Rodriquez and Nibali.

I suspect there is a lot more to the Wiggins/Froome situation than team GB are letting on.

Wiggins was pathetic today but the whole team lacked both motivation and form. They were truly shown up by the European old guard today and congrats to Nibali who truly deserved that jersey.

When has GB or Sky ever delivered in a one day race on anything more than the most boring Worlds course ever. Even then they stuffed the lead out and Cav freelanced to victory.

Props to Costa, he rode with ice in his veins, refused to pull, nailed it when he did. Vamos Espana, that was horrid, Piti to lose such an amazing opportunity. I can see the rationale being what they did, but Valverde should've done the 1-2 rather than let Purito dangle when you knew he had to start getting tired.

Any guesses on what Rodriquez was saying to Costa? Seemed a little suspicious to me.

I was thinking about this and wondering why with all of GB's new generation of cycling talent we seem to be producing a lot of people who are awesome at turning pedals over but who (with the exception of Cav) aren't that great at riding a bike.

Is it that the youth system is still way more focussed on TTs and track cycling than on the continent? Younger British riders maybe aren't learning bike handling and racing instincts as much? I don't know, that might all be nonsense. There's definitely a problem somewhere though.

"trying to make him nervous" according to Purito interview.

Masterful race by Costa. Perfectly timed move. Hard to beat two Spanish. If Valvpiti had been stronger he could have countered when purito was caught. That would have spared Purito the second attack and he could then have covered Costa.

Valvpiti was tired. Can't do much when you're cooked.

Women´s race was half the distance...easier to stay in the race until the finale.Like allways i think women´s races are too short.130 something km´s is just too short for a World championship. It´s not like women are frail beings who can´t handle a longer distance.
..Vos would probably win anyway though :D

I plotted Horner's data on an old plot I'd done of Lance. Low reticulocyte + high HCT is considered a signature of transfusion. Lance's plot seemed highly suspicious in that regard. Horner's is less dramatic, although the "pre-Vuelta" data contains other race data, including the 2010 Tour de France and the 2009 Tour of Gila:

That was some great racing to watch and a great lesson in tactics.

I thought there was plenty of star power present towards the end for a very selective race in nearly October. Days like that have to be difficult for a guy like Froome who built around the tour and checked out mentally two months ago. I guess the Spaniards didn't?

Amazing rides by J-Rod and especially Nibali with that crash. Really sad to see he or Purito not get the win after such great racing but they just did too much work. Not many other options for him in that situation though short of calling Costa's bluff.

Interesting to see no criticism here for Costa's rope-a-dope finale after the discussion around Gerrans' MSR.

Would have loved to see Rodrigeuz or Nibali win but at least it wasn't Valverde.
