Yep. He was on compact round rings when the front mech went awol.

Apparently, his spare bike had a standard 53/39 setup, so he was badly over-geared for the rest of the climb. Seems like a fairly big oversight by the team.

There are quite a few other riders in the peloton running the Rotor Q Rings that have a much better shifting than O'Symmetric ones. Haven't seen any issues with them. Now that Rotor has released the QXL rings that have an more extreme ovalization (16% vs 10%) they may be a better option.

Despite running oval rings myself, I'm not convinced they do anything and there is 0 scientific evidence with valid (i.e. non-SRM) test data with error removed on them. From someone I talked to the Sky trainers and riders determined no perceivable performance difference and got sick of the shitty shifting and ditched em in the off-season (minus Froome and a few TT bikes)

True, I haven't seen any scientific data showing increased power output but that's not the reason I use them. I like them mainly for when the road points up. For me, that's where they excel. That also seemed to be the case for when we would see them on the pro's bikes.

Even if the rings don't improve power but if they simply feel better that alone may justify their use to some riders.

I tried most of them, from osymetric, Doval and Rotor to the extreme Ogival, all of them provide a different feel but not a power increase, actually no increase at all but a feel of using more effective, longer, arch on which apply a smoother downstroke (from 0 to -20/25° with 0 orizontal crank).
Doval and Osymetric feels, personally (n=1) the best compared to the others; these 2 brands are quite similar in shape too but only the Korean rings have pins and a (normal) thickness that osymetric miss, these last actually being noticeably flexy and out of 2 sets, both were misaligned (lateral chain movement even without load, e.g backpedal).

there are some scientific articles about these rings, and they show how rotor shape is not good enough compared to osymmetric in terms of performance, shifting precision not taken into account. they mainly bring a more round pedal stroke, not more power directly, but it can help in steep hills, for some riders, not for all. It's a biomechanic change, rather than a direct power output improvement, otherwise everyone would run them, which is not the case... No magic here neither unfortunately...

I run Rotor Q-Rings simply because I got em for cheap. They feel cool I guess, but I really don't notice at this point. Would never pay full price.

Used the O Sys for a bit and wasn't happy with the shifting or the noise they made and could probably never use them again because of that.

Too many curves... I prefer Canyon's minimal approach. So Wiggins is still on those "Silly Rings" after all.
