It was much more than 5s-10s and he had to riders who immediately motored to gap him. He also overshot that turn and almost completely stopped in a giant gear and stupidly didn't downshift and roll up to speed. 2 things that killed him.

It looks like the front wheel had hard contact and the brake-track split!

Is that a Shimano front hub?

At any rate, I think SVM had a great race. The kid rode his race and his line on the cobbles and that's why he was there in the end. It'll be interesting to see how he bounces back from crying. Andy Murray did the cry at Wimbledon then won the Olympics and US Open, but I bet Lendl gave him a hiding as soon as he was back in the locker room after that one. Can you imagine Lendl ever crying on the court? Or ever?

I've got to say that to me, EBH's much vaunted classics prowess hasn't shown itself yet. Sort of surprised by that as he was touted as being the next Merckx and is a good rider, but hasn't even been close in quite some time.

Not to take away from a fantastic effort but winning counts. I agree with KWalker and others that SVM did everything right except the velodrome.

He didn't even try to get behind and opened up the sprint from afar.

with the banking, it would have be seriously cool for one of them to track stand. i bet the velodrome crowd would have exploded.

Tinea Pedis wrote:It's funny dj, I only ever read you lambasting Gerrans for being " a wheel-sucking leech" but never praising Fabian for his tactical nonce in pulling 2 other riders all the way to the line...one without the other, strange.

Especially when it was widely appreciated Fabian needed to race smarter.

Could it be that the former rode the smarter finale than the latter? That he was still better than all but one other rider at staying with Fabian off the Poggio and no other rider (read: sprinter) seems to cop the same treatment notwithstanding.

Spare us the constant soapboxing, please.

Cancellara had to pull or they both would have gotten nothing: the gap simply wasn't enough for any hesitation.

From Google:
wheel sucker
A derogatory term, referring to a rider who always sits in and never expends any energy by taking a pull at the front..
nencycling.org/wiki/cycling_vocabulary

I highlight the relevant word. I didn't invent the assertion that riders have a responsibility to contribute something to the success of a break.

How much do you race DJ? Have you ever been in a winning break? Its often the rider that works the least that ends up taking the win. Gerrans is just that type of rider- he has a motor and snap, but doesn't excel outright with either.

Not so much now, but a lot more earlier. I only won a few races and never had a good sprint, making it to cat 3. Best advice I've heard is work 2nd least in the break: take your pull and get off. Of course that doesn't apply to a 2-man break. I would be embarrassed to win a race having taken no pulls. But I'm not a pro, and we have our own motivations for competing. In this case I was commenting on public perception. And I think winning that way hurts the public's perception of of the value of the win, not to mention the rider's longer-term prospects for cooperation from other riders. A lot of people have a negative view of such tactics.

IMHO, winning is winning. As long as it's within the boundaries set by the rules, I don't see anything wrong with doing what is necessary. If tactics weren't involved, the guy with the biggest engine would always win. I know from my own racing experience, I'm having a lot more fun putting my pride aside and racing MY race. Sometimes that means pulling, sometimes it means following wheels.

Good catch Koebes...here is another picture showing the brake track split on the drive side: http://www.bikeradar.com/road/gallery/a ... y-36957/21

Cool that he was able to make it to the finish line without experiencing spontaneous combustion of his carbon hoops.

I was actually quite surprised seeing so many Teams on carbon wheels. It took a lot of testing for Zipp to actually find
a combination of layup and rim shape to create a carbon wheel for the cobbles. No you also see Corima Aeros and Campagnolo Boras/Hyperons which don't have a wider brake track.
