The first thing that comes to mind for me is that insane causeway they use in the TdF which is slick as goose shit because riders cross it just after the tide goes our revealing the surface from beneath the waves. I recall a major, GC-affecting crash happening there a few years ago and the leaders storming on showing no mercy to anyone who fell.

Barring any major crashes or issues (poorly timed mechanical etc..) I think he might be able to. With Purito gone and a bunch of others banged up he might be able to hold onto it...

No it's not. You don't see nearly as many crashes in wet conditions on northern roads. Just look at the Bari stage. Discs wouldn't have solved anything there.
