I was looking to see if lance is also annoyed by loud components, not really trying to copy him or affirm my kit decisions. sarcasm is a pretty low form of humor IMO

A DA chain will quiet it down quiet a bit. To cure it completley go with a DA chain and cassette.

A mate of mine runs Red and he finds the noise annoying too. He's jokingly said he should squirt some of that expander foam into it to deaden the sound. It "might" actually work I guess. *shrug*.

say what you will, i hear mostly wind blowing over my ears when riding

but... this topic made me think... so i put my Red bike into a trainer, and then picked the DA 7800 one... maybe there is something if you focus, but i think the sound is nice... suppose it depends on personal taste... or the lube you use? (try rohloff nasty muddy yellow stuff)
