Hi guys,

I've had a little search but can't find a definitive of what I'm looking for.

I have a garmin 800, and a couple of Powertap G3's

I want to use the GPS to track my routes, but want to use the speed/cadence data from the powertap hub.

I don't want to use the GPS speed, as it is too slow to react, so when I come to a stop, it takes ages to auto pause, and sometimes thinks i'm moving when I'm actually stationary. Can this be done?

Buy a Powertap Joule GPS computer. It does what you want, speed data from the Powertap can be set to start stop distance recording rather than GPS.

It also has the added bonus of not crashing and corrupting your data like most Garmin products do on a frequent basis.

All of what you want is done by default. When the G3 pairs with the Garmin 800 it find a power meter, it can also discover a speed and cadence sensors. It will prefer that speed over the GPS speed. I don't care for the cadence from the PT, so I added a GSC-10 and that's preferred for both speed and cadence over the G3.

If you're training with power, you shouldn't be using the auto-stop feature, you want to record zeros for time not riding.

most Garmin products do this frequently? I have a thousand rides logged on my 800 and I've never had an issue.

Agreed. Never had a single issue with garmin 500 or 800 in over 11000 miles!!

If speed is taken from the pt then why does my speed hang when I come to a stop?

And why would I want to record the stopped time with regards to power? If I'm not pedalling, I'm not making power...

I don't know about the speed part, but the power readings seem to lag too. Pick up the rear wheel and spin it, does it report the speed?

The preferred source order for speed is:

1. External Sensor / GSC-10
2. Power Meter Speed
3. GPS

Right, you're not making power, that's precisely why you want to record that inactivity. You can't gauge the stress from exercise over a duration if you're not recording the whole duration. Imagine a workout of 30" on and 30" off (stopped). You're only recording the hard efforts, and not the recovery you're getting. Your reported average power will be great, but it's not reflective of your actual stress since you were able to recover; your average power was actually 1/2 of what you're seeing.
