It was a bit rainy, but no where near as cold as it has been some years. I think the inclusion of the Muro di Sormano and other overly steep climbs kinda sucks as it drastically reduces the pool of riders who could win. In it's current guise, only super light climbers will win this.

Nice pics. I was watching the race maybe a hundred metres up the road from you!

Wow, great shots, 100x better than mine! Some great pain face shots in there.

I guess you guys never see any mud eh ?

Cool stuff though. Looks like a lot more serious setup then what we have around here.

Exactly why was the guy on the right in the air that high, and what happened when he landed? For some reason, it made me think of the Dukes of Hazzard.

Almost no mud. Maybe two slightly muddy races last year?

Flyover was fun. Had a very fast approach. Was easy to hit the stairs waaaaaaay too hot. Here's a dude, totally failing to dismount for it:

Another flat, hot, humid criterium in the UAE. My team worked really well and only a bit of bad luck prevented a podium place.

A group of 6 got away early on and me and a team mate bridged across. with most of the 8 in the break working at first we got a decent gap.

Image

About half distance people started messing around. I attacked the break, was caught and then my teammate got away with two others and got a minute ahead of us pretty quick.
All good - until he falls off

I drop back to the peloton and we hit the front as a team. Managed to bring back the break with 10km to go but i was pretty spent - Our sprinter was 4th i think.

Sorry for the question, but Im too curious to hear a first hand experience; years ago I heard that in UAE the amateur races would have decent money prizes, is it true or just a myth?

Yes, it's true, but not exactly cash. First place, use of an oil well until the same race next year. Second place, a barrel of oil. Third place, a litre of petrol.

So far i've won two races and each time picked up a cheque for 300AED - About 60euros so not too bad. I was happier in France where i'd win bottles of (sometimes very decent) wine.

There are special races every now and then though - i've not done one yet but just before i arrived there was the "Ramadan Criterium" where the winner (a guy who has also won a couple of times this season) picked up more than 5,000 euros...

There's another special race planned for the 26th of December but i won't be there for that one either - This one is to celebrate 50 years of oil production in the UAE or something similar so HammerTime2's prizes might be possible
