Heading to NZ with the wife from Oct 28th - Nov 19th and we have a pretty open itinerary. Looked into bringing our bikes but they are too expensive to fly (600 USD round trip)

We are planning on doing a bunch of hiking (tramping - :) ) but wanted to hit some nice road bike climbs if possible.

Any suggestions from the locals?

Thanks.

I'll look into bike hire and PM details.

What's your general plan?

I don't think I can PM yet (low post count)

General plan looks to be: (really high level)

Sat Oct 28th - fly into Christchurch, spend the night there. Car rental pickup.

EDIT: (Not happening, wife's skills are not up to par) - 4d Travers-Sabine Circuit (will hopefully do this on another trip one day)
3d Abel Tasman Coastal Great Walk

Something along the way?

Fox / Franz Josef Glaciers
x days? Queenstown

Milford Sound / Fiordland

3d Humpridge Track

Dunedin ?
Mt Cook (east side)

Other stuff / Spend time in Christchurch?

Spend the night Christchurch Nov 18th (at least).
Nov 19th Christchurch - fly home early AM.

Hey

Like Squashed I'm a Christchurch local.

We have lots of both Mtb and awesome hill road rides very close to town. Very happy to show you around if that helps.

Also I used to live in Dunedin. Riding there is like a scaled down version of Christchurch. The Peninsula hill road (which is very similar but shorter / lower than the Christchurch Summit Road) was voted the world's best road ride a few years ago, so that's worth a look too.

And on the west coast, if you want a real challenge, the ride up the Otira Gorge is extreme.

You'll love it :)

Cheers
GJ

This is one of my favourite tramps

It's a 5 to 8 hour tramp, each way, depending on fitness
Start by fording a river which is fun...and end up at a lovely natural hot pool at Welcome Flats.
Some great scenery en route
Night sky is amazing and free from light pollution
The hut is pretty luxurious by DoC standards

Ended up doing just some light MTB in Wanaka.

Did end up doing 130km of backcountry hiking over 9 days.

What an amazing place.

Expensive as hell though!

Did Routeburn, 2d on the Kepler (including luxmore summit in 80 km/hr winds and a meter of snow), Mueller Hut (Mt. Cook), Angelus Hut.

Hey, I enjoyed looking at your photos...looked like you had fun.

Yes, some amazing scenery & wildlife, lots of space. It's an egalitarian country...there's lots to do and it's freely accessible

Your right the cost of living has shot up in the last few years.
