Lance Armstrong already did a bit of cyclocross on the descent into Gap in 2003.

It's going to be very entertaining, you would hope that the Dauphine will feature a similarly short stage as a test to figure out any issues arising.

Maybe.

Or if the intention is to mix things up, maybe it would be better that the teams didn't have a rehearsal to work out their tactics.

I'm talking about logistics, not tactics. See the women's staggered start TT in Marseille this year.

Cycling is too nostalgic and romantic to do innovative things that would modernize the race. Going from 9 to 8 rider teams and a few novelty stages isn't gunna do it.

It could be as simple as the riders getting called to mass at the startline in GC order. I don't think ASO would do anything like staggered or handicapped starts in any TdF stage.

I don't think there's any reason to have a rehearsal stage in the Dauphine. In fact, if they didn't it might well make the TdF stage that much better since no one will have had a practice run to work out tactics and how they deploy them.

I think it makes teams bring a well rounded group of riders so they don't get hammered in a TTT. I like the event. It doesn't need to be run over a great number of km's but I like it in there for the spectacle more than anything.

IIRC, the UCI began in 1900, and the Tour 1903. So the TdF was always under UCI rules?

I doubt that.

UCI was originally a track cycling organisation only. The first road WC it organised was 1921, so surely wouldn't have been involved with any other road races until some time after that. Wikipedia mentions disqualification decisions in early TdFs being made by UVF, the contemporary French cycling union. And AFAIK the rulebook they followed in those early races was pretty much purely written by Henri Desgranges.

I've just read David Lappartient speaking against race radios and corticosteroids use (even under TUE permission). his argumentation behind the latter is pretty standard, but regarding race radios he claims it's quite possible for on-line betting mafia to influence race results. and he plans to introduce the changes during the Innsbruck WC

Potentially interesting dynamic emerging from Movistar. Quintana being pretty dismissive about Landa. Another area that maybe Froome could turn out to be better at as a grand tour leader. Could the Landa that drilled himself for Froome be replaced by the old Landa from Astana?

Landa will be interesting, with 1 fewer rider in each team you can’t afford to have 2 leaders heading into the GT’s next year. I doubt we’ll see Landa and Quintana ride together all season

Comes off weirdly paranoid.

About the corticosteroid stuff, why haven't we seen measurable evidence of performance enhancing benefits given the allowed dosages to put this thing to bed? You would think this would be a pretty simple and cost effective thing for WADA or the UCI or whoever to do. So far the only thing that comes up are comments from ex-dopers like David Miller claiming it's "powerful" (despite the fact that he used an unknown amount in conjunction with EPO and other things at the same time) and some off-hand comments from medical professionals that can't agree on whether endurance athletes would benefit or not. The weight loss "benefit" also comes up but riders don't exactly struggle with gaining weight in competition when they're burning 8,000 calories a day. Would maybe make sense in preparation of the event a few weeks before but the TUEs are taken just at the start or during competition.
