You'd think, for such a big fan of them and a sponsor that could probably lend him a disc wheel bike, that he'd be riding one in training.

I've seen a bunch of pictures of him training on them this winter...

I saw him out about 10 days ago on a normal bike. There weren't any photographers around which might explain it ;-) $$$$

Or maybe he has accomplished so much and is in the last year of his career and doesn't give a shit about what bike he rides at this point as long as it is functional and event-specific.
Don't take me too seriously. The only person that doesn't hate Froome.

now imagine he flats being in a break in P-R and loses the race because the neutral service can't change his wheel fast enough and there's no team car anywhere near..,

for someone his age who just had such a solid season, I'd say he has plenty reasons to give a shit about his last year - and I bet he does. of course getting paid extra doesn't hurt, and I wouldn't hold it against him.

it's funny he hasn't raced on discs before (or has he?) but perhaps it's not that much of a deal for him and the potential flat tire issues are topped by the numbers written on the check

if someone is flatting at that point in the race, race is done, regardless of disc wheels or not.

He probably must have a past-career deal with the big S.

He has indeed. An article quoting his father said that he will have a pr function in 2018: 80 days/year for the Quickstep team and for Specialized.

Boonen is renowned for being a nice guy, inviting journalists into his home and being very open. Can see why both Specialized and Quickstep want him on board. Cancellara on the other hand...

yes right for his after career deal ...
like cancellara and others !

But what bike could he ride for Paris-Roubaix ? The tarmac has enough clearance for the ronde van vlanderen
None of the rims brakes' bikes of Specialized has enough clearance for 30 or 32 mm tubulars
I think he doesn't want to ride the old roubaix witch is a slow handling bike and I'm willing to bet he will ride the venge disc

Pretty sure he will be on the new Roubaix for P-Roubaix. Tire clearance in spades.

Slow handling is a plus for Paris-Roubaix. Roubaix-specific bikes always have longer chainstays and typically also more fork rake (to increase front center) for this exact reason.
