I take my cassette and chain off and clean it in an ultrasonic cleaner using just dawn and water. It takes about a half an hour then I let the parts air dry and reinstall and relube. Comes out spotless with little effort on my part and the parts are spotless. My 2 cents

I take mine off monthly and clean completely with a environmentally friendly degreaser. I clean the chain on the bike three times a month with a chain cleaning tool and the same degreaser. I like having clean drivetrains. I have no experience with damaged wheels hubs but it seems reasonable that one shouldn't splash around too much if any degreaser near bearings.
