I spent a lazy Saturday modifying my shoes to accept standard Crank Brothers cleats.

I had previously been using their 3-hole adapter cleats.

This was achieved by buying some Shimano mtb cleat nuts off of ebay.

And drilling some holes and recessing the sole a little.
Image

This resulted in a 3mm reduction in stack height. Image

And a 15.6g weight saving per cleat.

Not bad for $10 in hardware :-)

RIP brass cleat, you never had a chance in this cruel paved world.

LOL I know. I may try to add some sort of rubber pad around the cleat to protect it.

Do a web search for "cleat adapter" and you'll find some options that might work which will essentially give you the same rubber "pontoons" that your Crank Bros. thing did.

Wonder why you didn't buy a new Crank Bros adapter? Are they not available? I've tried walking on and clipping into stand alone 2 bolt cleats and find it dicey for both (walking and clipping in).

Honestly, I was being a cheap bastard. The pair of regular cleats was laying around and the ones on the shoes were desperately worn. I figured I could save some money AND weight.
It is true walking around on naked cleats is a twisted ankle waiting to happen. I have another cheap fix planned. Stay tuned.
