Strava estimates are pretty good for steeper solo climbs with no wind. Good enough to get an idea of your FTP actually. You can also do it yourself with the VAM formula though.

For the rest, not so.

On a 10% gradient strava power numbers will be more accurate as gravity dominates there.

I hate to disagree, but the example I gave was on a steeper, solo climb with little wind. I just don't see any consistency with their formula or numbers. For what PM's cost these days, if you truly care about your training, it just kind of makes sense to grab one. Or, better yet, wait until Shimano debuts theirs and all the other companies have to drop prices.
