Thanks guys. Bike is a Chinese-sourced AC024 CX frame. Transmission is Campag - bet I was the only one there on Italian gears! - with 36x29 lowest. I was in that a lot. Brakes are TRP HY/DR, I wouldn't object to more bite but they got me round fine. Tyres were an absolute star, Schwalbe G-One tubeless in 35 width. I was praying for no punctures as some of the terrain was very severe yet I did get two punctures, my riding companion saw sealant coming out like a Catherine wheel, he said, but the sealant worked and I continued without doing anything but adding some air (G-One's fine tread not good for mud, though). I saw many, many riders stopped trailside fixing flats.

Dig out another layer.

25km to go: 'Just shoot me now.' He made it though. Colin here also on Chinese carbon, he ran Sram CX1 1x11 with 38 at the front and something wide at the back, also on tubeless, no flats. He was very pleased with that setup.

For a few years in the early 90s I lived in a place visible in this photo, Ferney-Voltaire which must be top left, just the other side of the airport. Liked going up the Saleve, a little bit of the Alps very close to Geneva.

Ultyguy, kingtom, and especially basilic -- You should all get some kind of subsidy from the French and Swiss offices of tourism. I am planning a cycling trip to the alps in June, inspired in large part by your posts. Thank you, and please, keep the pictures coming!
