Or Jacky Durand who pretty much made an entire career out of, um, suicide breakaways. Whether they succeeded or not.......

I don't recall them going in a break in the very first stages when everybody is fresh and willing to take the yellow jersey.

I was thiniking at weaker riders just going in a break just to show their jersey on tv for several hours knowing they have no chance of success.

They have gone on early stages. Fairly often. Both Voeckler and Durand.

And you do realise that the entire industry of professional sport (not just cycling) is driven by sponsorship and coverage, 100km in a small breakaway will be three hours of the mobile billboards (riders) getting global TV time, live. And then the repeats, and the news articles and so on. That's why they do it.

So they can eat next year.

if you read the earlier report, apparently he didn't start the fight. so not really his fault.

I'm guessing someone with a cooler head would have avoided that situation and be racing the Tour.

I seriously doubt that, had it been any other rider, the situation would definitely have excalated to the point of breaking someone's tooth on their hand. He probably played a pretty big part in how the situation unfolded.

I wasn't talking about that, just how boring it can be to watch.

I just guess that some teams having different goals than before can change the way they race.

Fortuneo for example, last year as Breatagne Seche they had to be visible and they sent a guy in a break from km 0.
But this year they may want to save energy and work for Sepuldeva and Mc Lay.

So hopefully this year we can have more structured breaks in the early stages with more strong riders instead of a suicide break with 1 or 2 weaker rider.

And it will be more interesting.

Can't say, the report comes only from Cofidis, I don't find anything else,

They pay Bouhanni 1 M euros a year and they can't find a quiet and safe hotel ... drunk people a saturday night is not uncommon in France...

For Cofidis the TDF represent 90% of the season.

interesting read the last few pages. boring events happen in all disciplines. doping's present across the stadiums and arenas of the whole world too. idiots arent uncommon either, they get drunk the day before or involve themselves in some stupid $hit in the worst possible moment, when they should stay put and focused.

Bouhanni used to be a boxer so I would imagine he has a lot of confidence in his fighting ability. Trouble is that he rides bikes for a living.
I get the feeling he don't like to take pooh pooh from anyone and because of his fighting ability does not back down.
I understand that stance but its best to look at the big picture and he really should have walked away, if on the other hand it turns out it was self defence then he can hardly be at fault.
Such a shame.

Talking of fights what cyclists would you like to see go mano v mano in the ring.

Its got to be Wiggo v Froome for me.

Ok, got to admit that seeing Froome and Wiggo go at it in the ring would be both entertaining and embarrassing. Like that YouTube video back when they they filmed the two pros going at it in the street. Not too many punches landed, and I'm sure the ones that did didn't cause too much damage, but oh so funny to watch. Sorry, back to pro boxing, er uh cycling.

Well, he could.

If a drunk person attacks you, then punching him in the face is self defense. However - it can be very easy to provoke a drunk person into attacking you when a different approach could have kept things calmer.

Also, Robbie McEwan vs Mark Cavendish. They'd be at each other like terriers.

Can't disagree and a good match up as well.
I would have to go for Robbie.

Andy Schleck vs Michael Rasmussen could be a whole other level of hand flapping until Cancellara or brother Frank step in to neutralise proceedings.
