2016 'PRO' cycling discussion.

what's the point of taking Landa to Tour if the guy is a big unknown and IMHO SKY can't allow themselves to risk any spot on their team.
Giro as a prep for Froome, sure, but a dude who is accustomed to winning, won't probably just take it easy, right? so he either races it properly, perhaps with a 'lesser' team, or stays home.

however good this decision is (DiData should remain in WT, period) instead of stability UCI and co. serves us with yet another period of uncertainty. now they wanna cut teams come 2018, but I bet if someone with pocketful of money wanders along, this idea will be 'adapted' as well... god they must be overworked, those UCI clerks...

Cash rules everything around me. The UCI only becoming a bigger joke under Cookson. So we can only hope that Bahrain loses it's intrest in cycling after a year and the team will disappear. Else teams who actually care for the sport and try to improve it might lose WT status due to lesser budgets.
Also the adding of 10 extra WT races but not making them mandatory makes no sense. Why add races to a WT if you have to change the "all WT races are mandatory to race" rule. It's all about the money again to add those races (of whom half have no place in the WT).

Do you really want Hein & Pat back, Rondje?

No I don't but it haven't got much better right? Cookson got no spine and really no charisma or anything a public figure should have, really got no clue how he got there in the first place. But then again, who can do a good job? It's like the FIFA really, corrupt people being replaced in a corrupt environment. We need a strong president that at least got the balls to stand up against the ASO before they become the sole rulers of cycling. ASO is only interested in earning money for themselves over the hard work of the teams.
a former pro, thats who we need.
someone respected by the riders and staff, with connections amongst fat guys from ASO, RCS etc. someone accustomed to dealing with the wealthy and influencial parties, but not tied too much to the buiness end peronally. someone who kńows the game well yet has determination to push it further...
any ideas...?

What teams do you speak of? Not to sound too cynical, but none of them care about the sport. The teams are a function of sponsors who care about... wait for it... money! It's all about the money. Always has been, always will be.

This is not accurate. Several prominent teams are (were) bankrolled by wealthy individuals at a loss out of personal interest. That's not to say that money isn't a factor, it obviously is as Tinkoff and IAM would attest, but certainly "always has been, always will be" is not a universal truth.

There were strong rumors that he wasn't happy at Sky and that he had offers for leave.

The thing I mean is, there are teams of wealthy individuals who disappear once the individuals get tired of the sport/shift their interests or see that there is no money to be made. While other teams lose sponsors and then continue to search replacement sponsors so they can stay in the sport. With that I mean teams like Giant (multiple name/sponsor changes since Argos), LottoNL, Lotto-Soudal, Etixx (altho most name changes are different companies from a wealthy sponsor), Movistar, etc. These teams like the sport and keep staying in it by continuously looking for new (potential) sponsors.
The sponsors might care for money and advertisement, but the teams care for the sport.
Edit: I know it might sounds like a contradiction as Bahrein - Merida comes forth from Lampre, but it's a different kind of sponsor then a company. I can't come up with a good motive for Bahrein to sponsor a cycling team except for the same reasons Abu Dhabi and Qatar organise races. Prestige.
