Hi everyone,
I'm looking to take a weeks holiday in Chamonix with the wife late Sept. this year and have been given the green light to do some riding early mornings from the chief.

Does anyone know if it's worth hiring a bike when I'm there? I would probably have approx. 3-4 hours most days but would have to ride from near centre of Chamonix as I wont have access to a car.

I would be looking for some good climbing with quiet (ish) roads.

any good?

cheers

Hi nibby! I'm there most weekends but away late Sept. It's definitely worth hiring a bike. Road bike rentals aren't the best but can be had, mtb options are better. Riding wise both have great options that time of year. Road riding right now can be a bit hectic (actually almost got sent to hospital by a tourist yesterday) but it's much quieter by September. For road rides you have Lac d'Emosson just over the Swiss the border along with the Forclaz. Back towards Sallanches you also have good riding on the Plaine Joux. Otherwise it's pretty much up and down the valley (Col de Montet, Le Tour etc).

gravel way back up from Martigny if you're feeling adventurous- https://www.strava.com/activities/315475162

great, thanks ultyguy. A bit of a change of plan that might now see me having a hire car so hopefully can possibly ride a bit further. I'm still probably limited to time and as you say up and down the valley might at least keep the fitness/legs up to speed :)

possibility if we hire a car I can also bring my road bike so fingers crossed :)

Yeah in that case you can hit more of the Aravis (Colombiere, Flaine, Saises, etc etc etc) but there's enough to do round Cham to keep you busy too.
