Does anyone have experience of budget spray painting setups? I want to do the occasional home painting jobs on frames, bars, etc, and rattle cans are a real PITA to use for anything more than a couple of minutes.

I'm not after doing fine detailed artistic airbrushing, just solid colour.

There are loads of HVLP kits on amazon, etc that appear tailored to painting emusion or creosote, and have cheap plastic heads. eg:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Earlex-HV1900UK ... B003ES42OU
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Terratek-Electr ... B00I06UI94

Can these compressors be attached to a finer, gravity-fed gun head such as this?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Scratch-Doctor- ... B00Q2RHZ4Y

Are there other/better options for occasional home painting?

Cheers

For bike stuff you might want a smaller gun like the last one. Maybe even an air brush. Getting even coverage on the interior intersections of tubes is much more difficult than painting broad flat surfaces. A gun that shoots less paint makes it easier.

I have painted a number of motorcycles. At one point I turned a back room of the house I rented into a motorcycle paint studio. I used plastic drop cloths to make a booth and rigged up an exhaust fan to refresh the air (blowing in to the booth would stir up dust). I used a regular air compressor with water filters and pressure regulators.

Check the local laws about the kinds of paint you can use. In California we're limited due to emissions laws. Also some of the most durable paints are poison and require more complex breathing gear.

Last tip: prep work is key. Take your time and do it right. The first motorcycle I painted while in high school came out very well because I spend a ton of time on it.
