This is definitely a time where I don't mind saying I was wrong. I figured he would be short. By quite a but actually!!

I figured that he'd be short too and was very happy to see him beat it. But with the rule change the record is 'soft'... he's allowed modern aero equipment to the pursuit spec but being compared to Merckx-style 'athletes' record. His record is almost the same as Moser's 1984 record. And compared to unlimited aero like Boardman and Obree he's up to 4km short.
I think the modern rules are more realistic than the 'athlete's record so I understand the situation.
I hope this starts more interest in the hour.

I'm not surprised by the result. Human output may just be an even playing field afterall.
Sosenka, that's unwelcome news. As noted he will need to be on the bio passport programme for 9 months minimum (?) to be able to mount a UCI-sanctioned attempt but I can't imagine they'd want him under any circumstances.

Yeah -- Dylan Casey already went faster than him and wasn't granted the record because Dylan wasn't on the Passport. According to one list I saw Dylan's 40-45 master's distance was better than the overall record. Ironically Jens could have gotten the overall record and not gotten the 40-45. They maybe should have had Dylan's numbers up on the pacing board, instead.
Here's an interesting and brief summary of "cycling's greatest hour" in The New Yorker:

Another more detailed article that I thought was interesting; also covers women's records. While the New Yorker article calls Merckx's bike "simple equipment", it appears Ernesto put a great deal of effort into it. 5.75 kg in 1972, drilled out chain, etc...
