Assos leg grippers too loose in brand new FI.13 shorts

So, after a long association, my gaze is diverted away from Assos when it comes to shorts now - my prime concerns now are: i) high quality thick pad; ii) long leg; iii) decent leg grippers 19cm across or less; iv) durable lycra.

Additional manufacturer suggestions (with across-leg-gripper measurements) would be welcome.

I'm the opposite of you. I have short thick legs. Capo and Louis Garneau are too long for me and they have a thick pad. Might be worth checking out. Oh and Castelli seems to have the ideal length for me (probably wrong length for you).

Did you measure the inseam of those Assos bibs before you sent them back?

Interesting what you say about Castelli, as some people on other forums have been recommending Castelli for taller slimmer riders. I had a Castelli foray of my own in the late 90s; leg fit was superb, with very long legs and nice tight 17/18cm leg grippers in 4 pairs size L (can't remember the model name, but they had red pads with lots of small holes). Great fit but average pads of slightly inadequate thickness.

I then switched back to Assos on account of their brilliant pads, but am certainly thinking of trying Castelli again as no doubt they will have improved their pads dramatically since 1999. Trouble is I don't want to incur lots of mail order return fees in trying out numerous models, so one of the reasons for the thread was to try to elicit some empirical data on leg gripper widths, as that will help steer me towards shorts that fulfil my requirements, but so far no one has felt inclined to measure their leg grippers!

Maybe I need to start a specific leg-gripper-measurement thread.......

I buy a majority of my Castelli stuff from Competitive Cyclist. Shoot them an email or get on live chat. They'll measure the leg grippers for you. They have always gone out of their way to answer my ridiculous questions.

Yeah Comp Cyclist is great cuts service I agree. Ive been using Castelli Nano flex knee warmers and find them very loose and stretchy and not elastic or grippy at all -- in fact I went through with buying knicker length shorts because I just got tired of sub-par knee warmers and decided to bite the bullet.

Trade-offs: Bib-knickers don't slip! But they can be hotter and less flexible with heat regulation or changes as day heats up and/or you do, they tend to be more fleece-lined and more season-sepecific.

But they won't slide off!!

I think Ive seen some Gore knee warmers that look pretty good Id look into those if I was going to buy again.

assos had a problem with shorts produced in 2012-13. loose grippers were a common complaint. quality control in new factory in bulgaria to blame.
just bought a pair of new s7 equipe. amazing fit. the seat pad is thinner than s5, lycra is very compressive. same comfort vs my s5 mille/castelli body paint. the shorts are still made in bulgaria but the fit/finish is back..added bonus is the cool box they ship in

assos is back on top..

As already said above, Castelli bibs are a really nice fit, particularly for slim legs. I've got 2 different models of their bibs & I am really pleased (I too used to wear assos bibs). The Progetto X2 seatpad is great in their higher end bibs & tights, and the leg grippers don't aggravate your skin.

Same problem with Assos Uno bibs too! I bought a L sized bib short last December because it was discounted. I did not even try it. I wanted to use it first today, but to my surprise they are an ill fit! Leg grippers absolutely loose, not that they are not gripping enough, but actually it's like a baggy short.

I have two of the very same S5 series Unos, bought at least one year apart, and they are the very similar, both fit well.
I'm 182cm, 62kg, so pretty thin legs.

Now, I guess I'll try a size M, question is there a difference in the legs' length?

Castelli has a pretty long short that runs tight. I'm a big fan of the aero race and body paint.

I was happy with Castelli's Aero race bibs fit as well, but found the chamois to be the worst shape and very uncomfortable. I can't imagine anyone's body would conform to what basically is a giant round frisbee for a chamois? I loved everything else about them, but had to move on.

So many great bib choices out there, but I've been lucky to have had success with Assos from several eras. My back up bib of choice is Giordana's Forma red. About as good a fit as Assos and a fantastic pad IMO. (I Noticed this thread is mostly from several months ago, but the info still seems useful...)

Got a new S7 Equipe, same "L" size. A bit better, but still too big.

62 kg, 177cm and 84 cm inseam , size M fits me well
