Well, I've received my next assignment. Time flies when you're having fun. It looks like I and the family will be heading to San Diego for my next job. We were supposed to be here in the Netherlands for 3 years but the assignment is being cut down to 2. We'll be leaving around September 2014. A little bittersweet as we are really enjoying our time here, but I am going to take command of another ship so, for a Navy guy, that's the best reason there is to transfer early.

I'm looking forward to getting to know the SoCal Weight Weenies!

:soon:

By the way, if any weenies in the SD area have kids who ride, please get in touch with me. I want to make sure my boys can get to know some riders their age.

Congrats on your command and kudos for your service to your country.

But damn I couldn't handle the moving. Lucky for you heading to one of the nicest places in the world as far as weather goes.

If the kids are interested in the dirt...

www.socalmtb.org has a large presence in the area to my understanding. They are high school and are expanding, albeit slowly, into middle school. Cool program with hundreds of kids on mountain bikes. Check it out.

How are the kids enjoying the Netherlands so far? You do realize you are living in one of the purdier sections of the country, right? :D

Exar, we are all enjoying our time here. It's a shame we have to leave earlier than planned, but it's as good a reason as a navy guy can get.

Mattr, we've gotten to the point of only unpacking bikes and clothes. hahaha

Following up on this thread. The move is still 9 months away but we are house-hunting and trying to get an idea of where we want to live. I'll be working downtown at the navy base so want to live within 25 miles (biking distance).

I've also reached out to a few of the local cycling clubs to establish contact and get some info. Unfortunately, none has responded to my queries.

So if any of you weenies has advice/suggestions for life in San Diego, I would love to hear from you.

At times when I'm not in the mood to climb as much, I'll do a century ride from LA->SD
Maybe you can try the opposite through PCH and take the train back.

I think that'd be a good ride to start with !

Less than 100 days until we arrive in San Diego. Who wants to go for a ride?

As a kid, I was interested in astronomy, and the ne plus ultra of astronomy was the then biggest telescope in the world, the Hale telescope, atop Mt. Palomar*, which conveniently** enough for you, is located in San Diego County.

* Elevation 6,142 ft (1,872 m)
Prominence 2,856 ft (871 m)

** well, about 100 km from downtown, but hey, the weather's nice
