no wheel choice is going to change your race result in this case. so run whichever looks coolest in pictures.

So have i read this correctly, a junior riding his first road race as a domestique in a 65 mile road race where the gears will be restricted wanting to know what depth of wheel to use.

Where do you start to answer that one!!!

Since when does a 65 mile junior road race have domestiques riding anyway?

I don't think he is a junior

Haven't been a junior for 2 years. I ride smallish gears because that's what's best for my body type. I don't have loads of power to like to spin. I'd grab a different cassette or rings from the shop where I work but we don't stock much Campagnolo 11 as there's little demand.

Max, you a little short of 'Internet props'? Or just have a really bad memory.

I thought a CAAD/Mavic combo seemed familiar.

Err, no. Just have not ridden a RR before, only crits, which around here are pretty flat but windy.

Little wind - 80
Windy - 20
The options of 50 have just come available to me so I was looking for some helpful advice as the course has some climbing but also a long-ass straight.

Err, a crit is still a race.

Course is a loop and you ride laps, sure. However I'd classify a crit race by a looped course where a lap is less than 2 miles and total race time around 1 hour. This race has 10 mile long laps and will take over 2 hours.

At the risk of adding very little to this thread which is going a little downhill... :)

Surely if you have these wheels at your disposal then you must be familiar with their characteristics, feel, etc. You know yourself, the course and your wheels better than anyone. If the question was "what wheel should I buy for my first race" then others might be in a good position to help out.

If you don't know yourself which to pick then go for the cheapest/ coolest looking as others have said especially given your aspirations just to finish

Be aware that if it's a bit windy in that part of the world on race day then on the high points of that course it will probably be fookin' howling.

Vincenzo Nibali just won the Giro Trentino on 24mm wheels. Lots of the other riders were running with 35mm or less. These days other than a TT stage you rarely see wheels larger than 50mm in a pro race.
