Somewhere between 15mm and 20mm

these are measurements for the one furthest away from the rider.

using the one closest to the rider and it's much closer than what steno shows.

I bought this one but couldn't mount it on my bars because they are slightly ovalized at the stem. So, I sold it to a friend who mounted it. He used it for about a month until his Garmin 510 fell off while riding. Upon further inspection, the mount had filed away the plastic tabs on the back of the Garmin (I believe there are some other alu mounts that have done this as well). He said he removed his Garmin after every ride to upload his training data. What a disappointment, the mount is really well built, sleek and all but....

So the tabs on the back of the Garmin broke off?

Yes, that's what happened. He contacted Garmin and they are going to replace the entire unit. He's lucky they are going to do that, so hats off to Garmin.

His Garmin must still be under warranty. I was out of luck that way when the tabs broke off mine using a Barfly. I find the Garmin mount a nicer product and its more gentle on the head unit... Not so tight but still a nice positive click.

Mine broke and is out of warranty. I got a display case and switched the internals from the broken one.

Where did you find the display case?

Calnago wrote:Ok, so I've had 3 Barfly 1.0's when they came out. They were ok, but a very tight fit and no positive engagement or "click" in the perfect spot. Always seemed to be adjusting it ever so slightly. But the biggest thing was that the tabs of a Garmin 500 Edge broke off and were wedged into the tight fitting mount. Can't say for sure if the mount is too tight or the tabs on the head unit are too weak. In any case, Garmin charges $80 to fix it (and what can ya do at that point).

So I tried the Garmin mounts. Very nice construction and I like the finish and texture of the material best of all the other units out there and it mounts very nicely. However, when the head unit is in the mount, although it has a nice positive and not overly tight engagement, the unit itself is slightly skewed to the left. Has anyone else noticed this? I've had three units, on three different bikes, and all the same thing. I contacted Garmin yesterday and the response I got was less than satisfactory. All I wanted to do was make sure they were aware of this (I'm sure they are) and that future runs correct this slight misalignment. But they said there were no plans to fix it. Seems strange when you strive to have everything on your bike perfectly aligned then you get a computer head that is slightly misaligned. Not enough that I asked for my money back, but still... quite annoying. Friend of mine has the same unit with the exact same issue.

mine was slightly a skewed as yours...what i did was to put my Garmin in position...then loosen the Garmin mount and angled that so the Garmin Edge was straight when locked in. I have the Enve Compact bars...and towards the mounting area, its not entirely perpendicular with the stem (slightly curved outwards as it exits the stem mount). so now, the Garmin out front mount looks slightly skewed, but doesn't bother me as much as the crooked Garmin.

I'll have to ask him if it was still under warrantee. He initially asked them if they would just send him a new back for the unit, they declined that. I wonder if these alu mounts that shave down the plastic backing on the Garmin units can be altered (maybe a thin film of silicon gel applied) to prevent this? You think the manufacturers are working on a solution or maybe it is not enough of a problem to warrant it?

It would appear there was an issue with older/first 'gen' Edge 500 computers as using Tilquist integrated mount I broke the tabs on my computer - one of the first produced - due to a low speed collision with an inattentive teen while I was riding home on the bike path. Opened a support ticket with Garmin and was prepared to pay the fee to have it fixed but a week after sending it in to Garmin US, FedEx delivered a brand new computer and I was never asked for any credit card information.

Isn't the Barfly plastic? I would think that the plastic on plastic connection would not cause a tab break, what do you think caused the break in your case?

I got a bump recently and saw my garmin 510 flew out with the tabs still in my barfly 2.0. I can't see how this problem can be the fault of any mount. Brought it to the distributor and he sent it to Taiwan for me, saying it'll probably take a month.

He says Garmin does not agree to sending them the casings for them to help customers with these problems, and speculated that perhaps they need to ensure waterproofness or check for damage.

Got it from my local bike shop. They can get display cases from the same place they get their Garmins from.

Contact Garmin first and see if they will warranty it for you first.

I went this route because Garmin quoted me 90usd to "fix" my broken tab. I can pick up a new 200 for 100.00.

Image

The process is fairly simple. Remove the torx (#5) screws, open case, the screen and main board will lift out.

Battery is taped in...so be careful when lifting it out. Trickiest part is removing the thin brass speaker. It has some silicone around it. I used a really thin and small screwdriver (jewelers type) to gently scrape the silicone out. After that...I used the same thin screwdriver to very gently pry up the speaker.

Once the speaker is out...you'll notice it has some adhesive on it. It will still be tacky enough to stay secure in the new case. Use a small amount of clear silicone around the speaker. I assume the silicone is there to keep moisture and dust out.

When putting the new case back together...make sure you take the rubber gasket from the old unit and use it on the new one. Display cases don't come with one.

Finally I peeled the serial number off the old unit and stuck it on the new case. :twinkle:

For the mountain bikers...I recently picked up the SRAM mtb Quickview. Pretty impressed with it. Sits nice and centered over the stem and has a nice solid "click" when I twist on my Garmin. This is a good option when your stem is too short to fit the standard Garmin mount.

Isn't the Barfly plastic? I would think that the plastic on plastic connection would not cause a tab break, what do you think caused the break in your case?

Yes, the barfly is plastic, or a derivative, but I actually think it was a combination of things, the first being the tightness of the Barfly (it is very tight, compared to say, the new Garmin mount). Also, it may have been the age of the head unit itself as plastic becomes more brittle with age. But I think a large factor was (the computer was on my girlfriend's bike) that my girlfriend wasn't exactly the most gentle with her equipment. I could see her just kind of twisting and pulling. So... can't say for sure which one contributed mostly to the breaking of the tabs... but the broken tabs were pretty wedged in to the Barfly afterwards. I think it is just way too tight. I guess the new Garmin head units also come with a little safety harness (friend has a new 510) which actually loops around the mount (or handlebar, can't remember which) in case of an accidental dislodging of the unit. That's a good feature actually.
