How do you not ride?

Being cold sucks and slipping and falling down sucks :)

Skate Skiing is basically like riding just much much harder.

Running is good. But strength training of some sort is great -- use muscles in a way which gets neglected most of the year.

Some good winter gear and good lights.

I think in down under using word 'winter' should be forbidden by a criminal law.

*Some* parts of Australia have a true winter. Like with snow and stuff. Sometimes.

Coldest I went riding in was -8 degrees. I know it gets far colder in other places but I think that's decent cold.

Otherwise there are a large number of indoor trainers to use.

Just keep riding.

I referenced this before. It's the only way to get fit in winter.

I ride year 'round. I commute to work by bike... 80km round trip each day. With the north Holland headwinds, I get my hill workouts in despite the roads being pan-flat. It seems the wind shifts every day to give me a headwind no matter what direction I am riding.

But seriously, I can't imagine anything keeping me better prepared for cycling season than cycling through the winter. I just ride an old cx bike with 32mm tires and fenders to keep dry (sort of) when the weather is bad. Cross-training is great to add variety, but only riding builds a good base for riding.

Some of you guys that live in mild climates can ride all year. I consider 32 F (0C) mild. What you might think is cold adverse conditions is a walk in the park for those that live in the north. At some point riding in cold weather 10F (-12C) and below is almost counter intuitive. Oh I almost forgot to add the wind chill factor to those numbers. Oh and the snow and ice.
And you might very well ride in those conditions totally doable. But I don't think you get the same benefits riding like that as opposed to riding in warmer conditions. Come up north and spend winter here  then we'll pole you again.

Lemond called it: The best exercise for cycling is cycling.
