after building some trainingwheels for my ww bike i deceided i actualy need a training bike
it gives me a chance to build a retro bike with a touch of fashion
a light bleu frame with a full white groupset and parts is already in stock








now for some white wheels
stock white wheels are all around in all shapes
but this calls for using parts laying around and some special requests
first up the rear wheel

its a 24 hole rim with a height of 31 mm
it could be a kinlinx300 but it was labled as a cnc house brand rim











then a light hub in black, white hubs look better with black rims i think:
shimano fitting, optional for campagnolo

got some work done, cant build the bike until i have wheels

for now the rear wheel only, still need spokes for the front, same story as always








i did the driveside cross one all heads in with black champion spokes
wanted competitions but did not feel like spending money on another box of spokes
while these are laying around






i did the non drive side cross 2 with competition spokes
revolution spokes makes a M5 rear wheel much easyer to build deu to the very small flange
where the spoke has to make a tight curve but it was not that hard to do






finally the weight, its build with pro lock nipple around so it should be bombproof






but the rear wheel is far from done

If it's really a training bike, you're going to be riding it in some bad weather. Perhaps white might not be such a good colour for the wheels? Depends on how much you plan to clean it I guess...

i must say that i dont mind cleaning with this much white
i have a shimano rx100 groupset in white for the bike that i must of cleaned it a thousand times
the wheels will stand out because its a more clean crisp white but i have set my mind to it
mayby i will change it all later who knows


wheel update:

my own special request is that i like ceramic rims
having them ceramic coated must cost a fortune
the industries must have this material applied with vapor or simular and have nice milling machines
time for a little experiment
my plan was to coat them ceramic myself
i am using liquad epoxy
it can been obtained with all kinds of minerals in the resin
and is reasonbel cheap if u do multiple wheels






this was later on more difficult then i thought
i am no paint expert and i certanly dont have much patience for time consuming experiments
the coating must be applied very thick because the brake track needs to be sanded a lot
to smoothen out and to make it straight
one the coating is applied perfectly it really works good
once u have a layer that is to thin the brakepads will remove the surrounding area creating a blank spot
u can not apllie it to thick because the epoxy will drip down the rim
to make things worse the incubation time is very limited
in short: u only have a short time to applie it without having the material becoming very chunky wich gives very un smooth areas
so the braketrack came out nicely but the try out wheels i did afterwards became very bad because the epoxy was to old

the results for now:





the black shiny areas are leftovers from the outer layer that consists before sanding
they are to deep to remove with out making the layer thin, but they are to small to reduce the lifespan
or brake performance






the added weight is also minimal
mind you my scale is very cheap but as long as the coating does not ad 2 pounds in weight the fault error can not be huge







i am still testing the coating on my brompton
the small wheels give a quick test because the wheels spin a lot
if some how the coating would desintegrade in lets say 10 years then it would still all be worth it
because i would still have crisp original brake tracks
i would simply re apply it and ride on

for now still waiting on spokes for the front wheel
building should be easy and a dreadfull proces of applying coating is a downside i am willing to swallow
i can only do onse side and 24 hours later the other
patience can be rewarding

busy days and havent got time to epoxy the wheel yet or take if from the garage even
will get there this weekend

for now how the rear wheel looks like
i am running a 28mm roubaix 2 tire for some comfort on long rides
together with the black brake flank it looks like a wheel with a 37 mm hybrid tire on it from the side
i should look for white ceramic coating ore something
i am running a leftover 12/25 Dura ace 7800 cassette
not really trainer material but it was a leftover from my movement to campagnolo on the ww bike






the front wheel wil consist of a cheap and light novatec hub
it has sloths in the spokeholes for optional aero spokes (wich i dont like with crosswinds)
the hub has nice steel teeth for grabbing on the fork on the axle cone ends
the flanges are a bit narrow so i will do the spokes heads in
i have seen quit a bit of spokes break heads out with narrow flange space for a front wheel
ofcourse with pro lock nipples on the spokes for durability and the black colour
this 50 gram hubs only cost 29 euro so i think its a steal

White spokes are also lighter than black ones as they absorb less photons....

Maybe some white walled tyres, too.

frontwheel ready to receive ceramic coating
lots of work but worth it, i was thinking of doing this to all my wheels
weight was 710 grams wich is really a lot more then i hoped for
originally i was going for a x270 rim
also revolution spokes was my first choise but the length made it hard to obtain quick
ofcourse these competition spokes will work to
this rim was much cheaper and without crazy postage costs
for a trainer wheel i can live with the shame








sweet cheap and light novatec front hub
wish i could do the rear to but when needed spareparts i go for more a known brand









spokes heads in because of narrow flanges
heads out look better but this should be stiffer and stronger

i have applied the first layer on the rim
after 12 hours its dry enough to turn the wheel around to do the otherside

i am actualy still working out the do s and donts with the epoxy
i got the cheapest version and for like 20 euro more i could of have the more high end ceramic stuff with a better friction resistence
this cheaper more metal then mineral version is also better usable for drilling and milling and in my case
having it turn into a brake track
currently i am trying out if older layer can be patched, have extra coatings of hase to be fully cleaned to bare matal when applying a new coating
and while normal and ceramic brakepads are eaten like biscuits (because of the more ruff surface then a professional coating) i also wonder
what the wear can be

for now pictures of the proces
i first applie small drips of the epoxy around the rim
then i smoothen it out with a small spoon
then it almost starts to go everywhere because its still a bit liquid:







then after removing the epoxy that is not on the brake track u can practicly see how it looks like
when it is dry:






then u have to sand it until it flat and ruff enough
i proberly have to sand it some more later with some smoother sandpaper then what i did with the first wheels
having brakes that are very snappy is nice but it spit outs brake pads like they are made of mud
i have to use a lot of sandpaper to get the tracks smooth
using a milling machine would be a lot better
i can vile it very precise if there would be enough material to get it smooth
my brompton foulding bike testing wheel will tell me all the the answers

this epoxy thing takes ages






i am keeping the wheel unsanded
it looks better en hast more thinknes to
a bit more weight but its not that much
braking is barely worse and i am kind of hoping that it stays longer on the rim
proberly brakes worse in the rain







every thime i do a wheel i have to throw out a lot of epoxy
the resin gets to chunky after a short while

i got bored of the colour of my first generation rival chainring
it does not match my black lightning crank spider




did some leftover on the chainring
its not smooth like paint but this will stay on for sure
proberly wont do anything for ware because it chips were the chain touches
same goes for all chains and chainrings in general






if i ever get serious with this material i would get the high end ceramic version
for now it takes to much time and the things i wanted have been done
ofcourse i would make another topic
unless i ever get a hold of a white ceramic epoxy

I've read this thread several times, but maybe i'm dumb?

What exactly is the point of painting over the brake surface in black epoxy paint? Ceramic coatings as in the old 90's rims is not a paint containing ceramics, but true a ceramic chemical coating process.

good question

its a resin containing ceramic minerals wich can applied like a paint (in the liquid version)
because of the hardner it wil dry up until its very hard
its being used for things like old exspensive pomps that are worn out but are to exspensive to rebuild/replicate
it would be apllied on shafts, axles and such to give it more lifespan against wear
therefore my thaught was if its good enough for high rpm and high load machines then its good enough for a bike
applying it myself is because i can have rims in ceramic that are not availebel and keeping costs low
it cost a fraction of the price to have it done by a professional
my other road bikes and mtb have factory build rims with a ceramic coating
such as the zak matrix, open pro ceramic and dt440 ceramic
if the rims were availebel in more colours,spoke holes and diameters then i would never go to this trouble
