Not really worried about the weight, just corrosion resistance.
Does it really matter what cables I use? Are the 5 dollar ones at wal-mart just as efficient, or do they rust? If not, what are your recomendations?
shifting/brake cables?

high quality cables are very important. get stainless steel cables, preferably with a slick extrusion. they last a lot longer and are inherently smoother. cables at wal-mart are better at cutting a small tree down than for any use on a bike.
