Symptoms:

The whole rear der has play at the top fastening bolt even when properly tightened. Shifting is pretty sloppy to say the least.

The "U clip" right next to the threads of the fastening bolt was lost (puzzles me how THAT could happen) so I had to find a replacement one, but the derailleur has not worked right ever since. It just seems that U clip could be 50% thicker and still fit in it.

I have not taken the der apart for fear of screwing it up.

This is 2006 Record 10sp with silver joints but carbon top plate and carbon cage.

On a related note: what other model rear ders will also work with 2006 Record drivetrain? Thanks!

not sure about repairing but if you have to replace, you can still get old model campy RDs around - e.g total cycling http://totalcycling.com/a-z/derailleurs/derailleur_rear_road/rdrecord2004.html.

The official line from campy is that neither of the current 10 or 11 speed RDs are compatible with the old model shifters but some here have been fine using the new 11 speed rear mechs (even claiming an improvement in performance): http://weightweenies.starbike.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=50606%20)

Hi

Sounds like the spring that wraps round the top bolt is badly worn. When that happens you get the side to side wobbliness of the rear mech that you're describing.

There is good news and bad news :) The good news is that its a cheap and easy fix (£5 parts, £5 labour if you get someone to do it - that kind of thing); the bad news is that finding people that have the springs in stock can be a pain. Mercian in the UK tend have stock, and I've used them in the past for this job, but that's perhaps not much use for yourself.

Carbon Centaur for under $120. Looks like early record.

There's sometimes a buggy.
How many drivers does a buggy have?

One.

So let's just say I'm drivin' this buggy...
and if you fix your attitude you can ride along with me.

I had a similar experience with an alloy centaur mech. The movement was caused by 'ovalising' of
the pivot bolt housing (for want of a better description). I placed a slim washer behind the circlip and
stuck it on a hack bike- works fine.

Thanks for the info. In my part of the world, Campy spare parts and repairs are pretty rare to come by. I think I will try to find something else to work with it. Maybe I will just hook up a 11 sp one to try it out. Might just work.
