I think kinlin are making the best rims at the moment. In expensive and the wrok very well as rims. More expensive rims are just that, they seem to offer little elese but fancy stickers.

Just use sapim race or dt comps for a traiming wheelset. Forget the aero compsextra expensce for no gain..

Some bloke was selling Aerolites for 99cents a while back. I got like 150 in 288, been having the lbs use their Phil Wood machine to shorten them.

In addition to the aero advantage of the flat spokes there is more: as a hobby wheel builder I find it much easier to work with them. The spokes do not get twisted which makes the tensioning easier.

It is mitigated a bit by using anti-seize on the threads. I'll build with 1.8mm db round spokes but for 1.5mm as an amateur I prefer the luxury of the bladed.

sapim race or DT comps dont twist. 99c is cheap. You got lucky there.

Buy cheap stack deep. Learned that lesson with surplus ammo in the early 2000s.

I forgot to mention that while Aerolites measure close to 0.9x2.2, the range for 0.8x2.0 on the TM-1 chart was spot on until about the 100kgf mark where it started reading higher than measured. If I switched to the 0.9x2.2 range at 100kgf then it was back on track. For round spokes it was reliable, both 2mm and 1.8mm.

I have not used the tm-1 chart anymore, I prefer the park tool wheel tension app. I wonder if the tension figures in the app behave the similar way.

Over here you don't have to be at war to shoot a bunch of ammo.

"Oh my gawd, you rode your bike 100 miles? That's kuh-razy!"
"Oh my gawd, you bump fired 1000 rounds of .308 in an afternoon? That is nuts"

'Murica!

Hello everyone!

I am back, i got the hubs and the nipples now. I was able to measure everything. Now i have a question about the spoke length, as usual the different spoke calculators give different results. Before i buy the spokes, i would like to discuss, just to be sure (Yes, I respected that the different spoke calculators wan to be fed with different parameters)

Front wheel:
Sapim calculator: 282mm both sides
DT Swiss calculator: 281.7mm both sides
Prowheelbuilder calculator: 282.9mm both sides

Rear wheel:
Sapim calculator: 279 mm NDS and 284mm DS
DT Swiss calculator: 278 mm NDS and 283.4mm DS
Prowheelbuilder calculator: 279.1mm NDS and 283.4mm DS

Now, the problem 1 is that the spokes i plan to choose exist only in steps of 2mm length.
Problem 2 is, that for the CX-Super Spokes, one should choose the spokes, which are 1mm shorter than usual, because they are more elastic.

Now to get specific, i think that for the front wheel, 282mm spokes are the best choice. And for the rear wheel, 278mm NDS. But what length should i choose for the drive side? 282 or 284mm?

I would be happy if someone experienced could share his opinion.
Thanks a lot,

I would choose 282. The generel rule of thumb is to round down.

Putting together the parts for a cheap cx wheelset for my rim brake cx bike.

Got a new 5800 32 hole hubset on craiglist, with skewers, for $50 cash.
Ordered a set of WTB DX23 rims on ebay, $19.28 each, shipped.

The hubs are comically heavy. R 367g F 156g Skewers 125g.

The predictable next action would be to order some Sapim Race spokes for 50 cents each from Danscomp. But since I'm so far under budget I'm going to order some bladed spokes. CN 494s for the rear and 424s for the front. After I measure ERD of course.

My current set of wheels works ok, but they are 20/24, and I keep getting small sticks thrown up in the spokes. With 32 holes I'm hoping that will happen less often. :noidea:

Total weight should be around....1900g.

I'm on some light Novatecs on my current wheelset and I hate the way the rear feels. I want something solid. And quiet.

The WTB rims came in. Right on 604 erd, 515g in weight, and spoke holes are already deburred. Very nice.
