Hi all,

So I want to get some good-riding aluminum tubular wheels, want to spend as little as possible, but 2 options at $750 caught my eye. Priorities are, in descending order: stiffness/power transfer, weight, dependability, price, servicability.

1. It looks like I can get a set of HED-rimmed, white Industries-hubbed, CX-Ray-spoked wheels in 32/28 spoke count for around $750.

2. Comp. Cyclist also has on sale Ksyrium SR tubular wheels at the moment for around $750

3. I see the Neuvation tubulars are something like $375-$400.

For reference, I currently ride some Mavic SSC Ultimates, which I like a lot, especially the stiffness. I also have some Neuvation clinchers which are just fine, not great or terrible in any way, except (great) that they are affordable.

Any informed opinions on any of the above, especially in comparison to each other, whould be most appreciated!

Hi dogrange,

I have the Neuvations, and I don't think I recommend them. Well - they're super light, came in under weight for me at 1,319 grams. And the price was phenomenal, less that $400 shipped. However coming from some Zipp and Campy wheels, the hubs just suck. Spoke tension is all over the place. They roll poorly. Doing laps on a 10 mile loop that I can do nice steady high pace riding, I was slower. But if you know your way around a wheel, maybe these are easy-ish fixes. They're also 20/24, not sure if that would be stiff enough for you at whatever your weight is.

Fairwheelbikes should be able to build you a set of Kinlin rim, cx-ray spokes and white industry hubs for ~$650, just going off the sum of all the parts. HED or Ambrosio could be done if you want the higher spoke counts.

Lastly, check out Williams Cycling and Boyd Cycling, both should have an aluminum tubular option for around $500.

The HED alloy tubular rims are excellent. Much better than the subpar (ATMO) velocity major tom. I like the wider rims, such as the HED for gluing ease.

Nemesis rims are also excellent, as are the F20 if you are a lighter rider.


That is a good price on the Mavic wheels. But, I personally don't care for the ride quality and crosswind feel of those wide spokes.

Go option 1. get the hand built HED wheels...can't stand pre-built factory wheels...

If you want a hand-built wheel, you do have a lot more options. I agree with the suggestion of Ambrosio rims. I like Sapim spokes, but DT and Wheelsmith are fine, too. For hubs, I would recommend adjustable (loose) bearings (like Record or Dura-Ace).

Mods, please, this is not "a tubular thread". It's about glueing tubulars. If you're going to stick everything with the word "tubular" in here then everyone who subscribed to the original thread is going to receive notifications about topics that are not necessarily related to the original subject and vice versa.

fdegrove, this may have started as the "Glueing tubulars" thread, but it became a general purpose tubular thread when the thread title was long ago changed, by Frankie-B, to "Glueing tubulars [the tubular thread]". So, tough luck if you're getting notifications on non-glueing posts concerning tubulars. I would note however that since there's a "Repairing tubulars" thread, indeed it is sticky, then this thread would appear to encompass all aspects of tubulars other than repair.

Actually, it turns out that Frankie-B turned this into a general purpose tubular thread on the reqeust of a particular user.

There's a difference between how to use and chose tubular tyres and wheels/rims that happen to be of the tubular persuasion.

As as HT2 pointed out, this thread is not simply about gluing tubs. Rather all encompassing, short of repair.

So everything remotely related to tubular wheels and tyres alike is going to be put into a sticky thread? Really?

glue thread for gluing - it's a technique thread (which imho would benefit from some serious pruning)

making it the home for tubular wheel questions as well is madness

are we really going to suggest all posters asking about wheels go read 150+ pages? aside from anything else it'll make it even harder to find the pearls of glue within the fluff

That's your choice. No one is 'forcing' them to come in here, they just do as it pertains to their interest. I also condense down a lot of clincher threads.


Also, given this thread is already 150+ pages.

And it being also known as the tubular thread for nearly as long.

And Frankie not having a submission from either of you two to be mod's and help keep this place clean.

Then it's going to stay the way it has.

I do disagree with the moderator strategy here.

Keep all things regarding tires and attaching them to the wheels here and all things regarding wheels outside.
Avoid goulash.
