These appear to be popping up online at pretty deep discounts and I have always considered it a beautiful frame. I've had a hard time finding any detailed reviews of the frameset as well as any weights, (I know it's not super light or anyhting). Anyone own or ridden one and could share perspective? For comparison im currently riding a 2010 SuperSix.

Good frames, pretty much bombproof (like most stuff from Merckx)
Far from light, but a nice frame all the same. I never understood why they weren't more popular?
I noticed them coming up at crazy prices recently as well and have considered picking one up (although my wife would probably kill me)

i'm assuming one built with anything other than campy would be frowned upon?

Why don't you tell that to Eddy Merckx Cycles http://www.eddymerckx.be/EUR/en/bike/male ?

Also, please tell Ernesto

Is Ernesto grimacing at the thought of all that Shimano all over Zabel's bike?

it's a variation of the pinarello prince. over-simplification for sure, but they are made in conjunctino with pinarello. I looked into this, but the frame didn't fit. For the money they should be good frames. Merckx modified them a little and the reviews of the changes were favorable. I believe the changes made the bike a drop more stable and better for centuries versus the pinarello version. Also think the emx-5 looks nicer as I don't like pinarello styling.

The Merckx bikes don't look too terrible as pictured above, but those Colnagos look utterly disgusting with the new Shimano 11 speed groups. BARF!

Life's too short to sport an Italian bike without Italian kit.

Long live the horizontal top tube, standard crankset, and Italian threaded bottom bracket.

this notion that one should only put campy on a colnago is ridiculous. bikes are meant to be ridden and enjoyed. personally i put ultegra 6800 on my c-59 and have no regrets. bought the bike for me and nobody else.

The notion of which you speak is not ridiculous, it's a personal opinion; everybody has one. Not only that, I never said that one should only put Italian kit on an Italian bike, just that I think it looks like a feces sandwich when done and would never do so myself.

PS: I didn't initiate the all so common Shimano kit on Euro bike argument, but I do love to participate.

Not the exact same frame you are asking about, but close I think. I briefly had a Merckx LXM frame. Nashbar at a great price. 50cm c-c sloping. Long headtube if that is a concern. Fork 468 grams. Frame 1223 grams. Seatpost, comes with one in a weird diameter, 251 grams. Seatpost clamp 37 grams. Italian bottom bracket.
