Lightweight inexpensive wheelset for madone 5.5

While my 2008 Madone 5.5 is approx. 16.4 lbs, I want a lightweight wheelset and lightweight tires without inner tubes to save weight, without breaking yhe bank. Suggestions? Next after that are a search in compact gearing.

Please specify how deep you want the rims. Rim material?

Tubeless will not save you weight. There are 50gr inner tubes out there with low rolling resistance. Tubeless adds weight by heavier tires and sealant. (People run tubeless for other reasons than saving weight)

Are you willing to get your wheels custom built?

Any hub preferences? What of your weight?

Do you run mostly flats? Then braking performance is less crucial.

As mentioned, there are a lot of options for custom build wheels. You could get around the 1300 g mark at less than 450 €. 40-50 grams Lighter is possible at few extra €€. But from there on, the price moves significantly up. Depends on your weight though. The very light options aren't for clydes. And all this is alu rims obviously. If you want carbon, you'll have to double those price tags.

Bitex hubs, Kinlin xr200 rims, Sapim CX rays in 20/24 spokeconfig will be close to 1.300 grams. Maybe 1.310 or 1.320...


If you upgrade hubs to Tune or Extralite, they'll be even lighter. But more expensive as well.
