Cero AR24/AR30 wheelsets

EDIT: The below information may be a bit dated. It sounds like they have their new 'Evo' model (2017) of the AR30 which is unfortunately much more expensive than the original 299 pounds that I saw. However, the AR24 seems like it capture the essence of the original - about 30 more grams but much cheaper! Here are the links for those:

At 1399g this looks like a nice wheelset (especially for the price) and I keep hearing rave things about it. Seems like it would compare really well to the Zonda C17 wheelset (I haven't ridden on either on, being honest) however I'm having a hard time finding these in stock or anyone who would carry such a wheelset in the US (plenty of UK dealers).

Anyone try these? I am going to try reaching out to them to see if anyone carries their wheelsets in the states.

Due to my interest in the price/weight ratio of the AR24s, I've been trying to find some comparable wheelsets in my research for upgrading my bike, as well as for those who are in the same boat as me who are trying to find a nice lightweight but budget alloy clincher wheelset.

I talked to Cero wheels and the price is 249 + 40 (pounds) shipping to US, which conversion puts it at $375.


I know price per gram doesn't mean hardly anything (you could have a 2200g set for $100 and the numbers would be amazing) but it might be helpful for comparing wheels with a similar weight or at a similar price.

Any others I'm missing?

I was interested in these wheels last year. I asked around and was told that it would be better to build a wheelset as they were most likely re-badged Kinlin rims.

Have a look at these wheels built with Kinlin XR200 rims as an example of how light you can build them.
Can't guarantee the build quality of these though.

If you break down the components of the new AR30 i'm not sure they're worth £500 given that Superstar Components are selling similar wheels, albeit in shite colours, for less than half the price. Perhaps they'll have a sale and discount them heavily which seems to be de rigueur.

Its a pretty competitive market at that price point, and I dare say you could get some nice handbuild hoops for that price. As posted earlier, the rim is made by Alexrim ( Pro 30) and the hubs are more than likely made by one of the holy Taiwanese trinity of Novatec / Powerway or Chosen. 6061 alloy is preferred by Powerway.

FWIW, the original AR30 hub ( made by Chosen) was a bit lightweight and couldn't cope in in the wet hence the reason cycle division have a disclaimer.

Bottom line is- the new 2017 AR30 will be a nice wheelset but you could probably find something better for that sort of cash.

got the AR24 evo's recently.

Plus points.
Easiest tubeless ready rim interface to use, i've ever come across.
roll very well
braking is good
sealing is fine for year round use in the UK.
sturdily built.
QR's are decent

Negatives
the logos are a bit mundane
larger tyres ( 28mm gp4000s) tend to lightbulb a bit due to the rim width
no spare spokes.
won't be aero ( but thats to be expected!).

weighed them on my old digital scales and they are just under 1480 grams.

So after a shakedown and couple of other rides, these work very well, though because they are 22mm wide, i think the best fit is probably 23 or 25mm tyres ( I Use GP4000s tyres which come up big usually). the 28s felt ok and rolled well enough but like when i used to use 25's on c24's they felt unusual when cornering. might have been too low a pressure though... since swapped out for 23/25mm tyres.

anyway for me these replaced a set of Hunt Aero race wides, and they are as good if not better day to day. the hubs seem more weatherproof than the hunts, who i had to retire because of sticking/ broken pawls and multiple bearing failures.

Oh, you had issues with Hunt aero's, the carbon ones? I've been running the 4-season version for 6-months, freewheels seems okay right now. Only comment is that it seems a bit noiser now?

yes, thats a sign. possible part worn bearings. the 4 seasons have better seals than the aero wide that i had. all the same give them a service....
