i just removed the thick yellow plastic vinyl rim tape from my kinlin 19mm wheelset. they weigh 22g each.

is there a lighter option for rim tape? will electical tape work by just covering up the holes? or stans?

Blue Schwalbe tubeless tape is a lot lighter, not too pricy and reliable. Electrical tape is not strong enough. You could find some textured tape from 3M, it would do the tric.

I second veloplugs, I've used them in about 8 wheel sets over the last 5 years and never had an issue with them and they're about 5-6g per wheel.

Veloplugs have their own limitations. They do not fit all rim holes. Red ones can be too lose, the yellow ones will not sit in properly.
I used them for quite short period of time (Archetype rims). After having spectacular failure, where one of the plugs was melted down and pusched inside the rim, I thanked them for good.
Stan tape, cheaper alternatives: kapton tape or Tesa 4289 (very similar to Stans).

+1 on the scotch tape.
I'm curious if veloplugs plus skinny strippers would be good enough for road tubeless.

just came back from LBS and found some Stan's no tube rim tape. but they only have 21mm, whereas my kinlin 19mm profile rims have 16mm internal width. :(

took a sharpie.. drew a fine line around and took a knife and cut around it. now it's perfect 16mm. :)
