Hi,

It was suggested elsewhere that I start a new thread to consolidate links to all of my existing and upcoming hub and wheel related Youtube videos.

I have recently started uploading detailed reviews and critiques of high end hubs, and related parts, as well as full service instructions, which I hope to be of use to people looking into buying an expensive hub, or wanting to know how to service their existing hubs / see how it is made, etc.

So, here is the channel; http://www.youtube.com/user/thedarkinstall

And here are the current videos I have uploaded. There will be more uploaded continuously as I make them. I have a big list of videos to make which I am slowly working through.

I will post more in this thread as I make them. Feel free to subscribe and also check out the other non-hub and wheel related stuff (although it might not be to everyones taste, haha)

Also, I mentioned in the other thread when it was suggested I make a new thread for all this, I hope this doesn't seem to spammy, and I am making all these videos to be helpful to people, nothing more.

If you have any requests for in-depth reviews of other hubs, or any bike part, let me know and I will do my best to make it.

Cheers!

Good stuff, although the bit about impregnating your wife's sister and then catching the knife wielded at you by your wife kind of freaked me out a bit.....! (Skewer review)

By the way, I use simple allen bolt on's and I never had any issues with slippage.

Ah, thanks a lot!

Glad the videos are being well received. I will keep making them and posting in this thread when I upload.

Haha, come on mate, we have all been there :)

And yeah, bolting the hub on would solve all of that for sure!

Back to the videos then; I am currently making a multi-part wheel building video series, as I am building a wheel set for my friend as we speak. Will get that uploaded next.

Cheers for the nice comments. Means a lot, and has encouraged me to really go for it with this channel.

Much appreciated!

I've found a bit of locktight on the Extralite adjusters helps keep the preload stable. Also you can use a socket to adjuster the preload not a spanner.. Causes less problems.. Just make sure you turn the axle not the socket so you don't scratch the hub. For the front I use a tire lever ( plastic ) to lock the adjuster ring and again turn the axle.. I've sold a good number of wheels built with them. I stay away a from the SL hubs because of the low drive side tension limits. Same thing keeps me away from the tune 170 rears too. I find 115 to 125kgf to be good tension on a rear hub with a 45-52% tension ratio so your NDS tension isn't so low the NDS spokes go slack. Both the SL and the tunes can't get even close to that kind of tension and unless you have a very light rider I find them just not strong enough..
Good work though the videos are well done

Hey,

I also mention adding loctite to the micro adjusters in the video. Agree with you about turning the axle, rather than the adjuster. It is still possible to slip though, especially if you have put in Loctite and things are tough to move :) I will address this stuff in the Full Service videos I make for the Extralite hubs, like I did the Tune Mag170

About the tensions; yes, I totally agree. I actually have some separate videos planned dedicated solely to spoke tensions of different high end hubs; I am going to do it as a a vs. b vs. c etc., style video, which is why I didn't include the information in the individual hub reviews. Will post those here when I have done them.

Cheers.

Great stuff! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

I will say that your resources gives users like me a lot more confidence, as someone who has just acquired a wheel that uses a high-end/boutique hub.

Thanks guys

I am in the process of making a 3 part video series on building a rear wheel. This should be of use to people who don't have a truing stand, and are building a wheel for themselves.

The first part is uploaded now, and the last two parts will be done tonight (fingers crossed).

Will update the first comment in the thread with links to this once I finish.

After that I will make the Extralite Cyberhubs full service guides.

Cheers.

Finished the 3 wheel building videos. First post now updated to include links.

These videos aim to show some of the details of wheelbuilding, and also show how it is possible to custom build a wheel to fit into your frame, without using a truing stand.

Now, I know that everyone has their own methods for wheelbuilding, so don't take this video series as absolute instructions on what to do :)

Just watched the service instructions for Extralite Cyber Rear hubs.

In your opinion, is there any recommended substitute for the Alugrease?

Hey,

Just updated the first comment in the thread to include a link to the Extralite servicing video.

Alternatives to Alugrease... hmm, well I have to be honest and say I am not really much of an expert on grease, so I can't really suggest anything different. Extralite state that "Never use Lithium, addittived nor thick grease", which was suitably vague, so I just went with their Alugrease. I am sure others can suggest alternatives though, while I quickly learn everything I can about grease!

Just uploaded a new one; Dura Ace 9000 C24 wheelset indepth review and analysis.

I managed to get my hands on a wheel that had been fully broken, so was able to take a look at how the spoke system works, as well as the carbon laminate, and a detailed look at the axle and bearing setup.

Link in the first comment, as usual.

New wheels related video just uploaded.

A general guide to getting cartridge bearings out of hubs, and putting new ones in, with information on tools, and procedures. This is a general guide, and not focusing on a specific hub, so should be useful to everyone who wants to know how to replace the bearings in their hub.

Link in the first comment, as usual.

Cheers.

P.S., I am also in the process of making a cut up, highly edited art-nerd video, documenting in mind shattering detail, a complete bike build, sliced and synced to music that sounds like it was made in Excel.

Very (very) quick snippet here...
