Building up my first 29er and considering some hand built wheels.

Bike:
Soma Juice 29er steel hardtail, with 100mm Fork
Will mostly be used for xc style trail riding and an occasional race, I am 6'1" 165-170lbs (185cm, 75kg) and typically not too rough on equipment. Looking more for durability and quality as opposed to bling factor. Running Continental X-King 2.2in tires set up tubeless.

Planned as follows:
Hubs: DT Swiss 350 6-bolt, 15mm front, 142x12 rear, 32 Hole Front and Rear
Rims: Velocity Blunt SS
Spokes: DT Competition laced 3X all around
Nipples: DT brass nipples

Does anyone have any suggestions to improve, or see and issues with this set-up?

Personally I would consider going some light bicycle etc hookless carbon hoops but the rest of the build is pretty bomb proof.

The op's build sound fine to me. I have the blunt 35 rims and thry are ace. My favourite clincher set uses the ryde trace 25 offset rims. Those things let me climb like a mountain goat or is it the tyre or me. I like them anyway.

The hubs you have picked are perfect.

I just got some carbon laced to dt240 xc wheels and I was shocked I could hardly tell a difference compared to my older aluminum matrix rimmed wheelset.

Anyway, I'd stick with that build and not mess with carbon.
