I have recently (<2 months ago) purchased a set of handbuilt road wheels.

HED Belgium 23 clinchers
Sapim Spokes
The other day I was taking my cassette off to swap it and noticed there is about 1mm of lateral play in the rear hub. The Drive side axle end cap can be pulled 1 mm laterally with minimal force, and thus the freehub body can also move this 1mm. The play is only when the wheel is NOT mounted in the dropouts. When the wheel is mounted there are no issues with lateral movement.
i9 says this is normal due to the design of the hub. The is a groove in the axle and end cap, in which an O-ring sits to act as a pressure/friction increase mechanism due to the press fit design of the end cap.
Curious if anybody else has these hubs and notice the same lateral play I have? I did not notice this play when I first got the wheels, however I was also not inspecting the hub for any defects.
I have not yet had a chance to disassemble the hub and inspect it for myself, it's as simple as pulling off the non-drive end cap, followed by the drive side.
